Anti-biotics

For all of you with sinus infection what type of anti-biotics do you use, how much do you use and how long did you have to use it for?

Re: Anti-biotics

Use of antibiotics depends a lot on the medical history of the user. A lot of folks who rarely get sinus infections will do well on standard antibiotics like zithromax. Those of us with chronic recurring infections need something stronger. That's the point that it will depend on the doctor and the patient. I've had the highest strength of augmentin a couple of times - under threat of being put in the hospital for IV antibiotics. I find that quinolone antibiotics work very well for me, but a lot of people can't tolerate them.

Re: Anti-biotics

antibiotics don't work very well for sinus infections. But they can be delivered via a nebulizer or even IV if necessary.

Augmentin works pretty well.

Quinolones and floroquinolones have very dangerous side-effects. The FDA has been petitioned numerous time to put a "black box" warning on them. Some people want them taken off the market altogether. If taken with Prednisone, the chance of a side-effect is greatly enhanced. Levaquin and Cipro are the most dangerous (ruptured Achilles tendons, peripheral neuropathy, permanent nerve and connective tissue damage, etc. Avelox is also very toxic. These drugs are not antibiotics -they are a form of chemo-therapy. Only in an instance where all other avenues have been exhausted (surgery, other antibiotics) should they even be considered.

Re: Anti-biotics

Are they the only antibiotics you can take for a sinus infection? If you have post nasal drip and you cough stuff up and it's clear can you still have an infection? I have itchy ears post nasal drip and I'm very dizzy. I have been dizzy now for a month. Has anyone had these syptoms and went on antibiotics and then they werent dizzy anymore? I have tried sudafed but for some reason it gives me INTENSE sinus pain and it makes me dizzier that I allready am. Never had problems with sudafed untill all this happend. I have no idea why or what is going on

Re: Anti-biotics

Lisa,

Chlor-Tremeton should set you right (12 hour). It is the most powerful antihistamine you can take (prescription or otherwise). It will take about 2 days. Zyrtec may also work (but that is by prescription).

If the dizziness persists, go get your sinuses checked out by your ENT. You might have a sinus infection in your Ethmoid sinus cavity next to your eyes, which can cause dizziness and lightheadedness. Also have him check your ears.
