Hypersensitivity and Reactions

I am new to these boards and am wondering if there is anyone else out there suffering from my malady. I am hypersensitive to a number of medicines and other things, among them: caffeine, codeine, sudaephedrine, novacaine, just about any decongestant or antihistimine, albuteroll, etc. The reaction I have if I take even a small amount of any of these is racey heart, confusion, nervousness, shaking, etc. and these symptoms last up to 12 hours. I visited an allergist and he told me that what I have is not rare, but that it is uncommon. He did not call it an allergy because he told me that if I take these things I will not die, but I WILL feel terrible, and I won't know if I can or cannot take something until I try it. He also told me that for some reason my body turns these things into adrenaline, which is why I feel so hyper when I take or ingest them. In addition to feeling bad, most of these medicines don't work because my body has cancelled their effect by changing them once they are inside my body. The allergist also told me that my sensitivity will only get worse as I get older and that this is something that you are born with and that there is no cure. My concern is when I get a cold, which because I cannot take any type of decongestant or antihistimine, usually becomes something much worse (ie. bronchial asthma - hence the discovery of the albuteroll reaction, a sinus infection, etc.). Any suggestions about what to do about this, what it is called, anyone suffering from it, etc. would be appreciated.

Re: Hypersensitivity and Reactions

My mother is hypersensitive to a lot of medications, but seems to be okay with caffeine and novacaine.

You might ask around and see if there is a specialist in your area on this - probably an internist but I don't know.

Have you tried nasal inhalers? Atrovent is an inhaled nasal anthistamine. Inhaled corticosteroids can keep inflammation of the sinuses due to allergies down. These may be more tolerable for you than oral meds.

When you start to get a cold or nasal allergy, you may want to rinse your sinuses with a combination of distilled or purified water and a little salt and baking soda. This can help flush out some of the mucus so it doesn't hang out and affect your lungs. I find it really helpful.
