sudden spike

I have a question hopefully somebody can answer. I have had high blood pressure all my life. I have narrowed arteries and neurofibromatosis. I have had angeoplasty (sp) years ago. I am 39 5ft and 117 lbs. My blood pressure for the past 11 years has been under great control taking labetalol. 2 200mg 2x day. Suddenly in the past 6 weeks it is completely out of control 177/115 200/116 at one point. My dr. is slowly adding dosages of the labetalol , some hydroclorthizide, but nada... what is happening ? My diet has not changed. Everything is the same in my life. Does your body grow use to medications?? any help would be appreciated.

Has your labetalol been switched to a different manufacturer?

You've got a difficult and unusual problems.

Many people develop some resistance to some meds, but I don't think that would be the case after 11 years.

Questions that I would ask would be: Did you have a bad cold six weeks ago, which could have made you more sensitive to your environment/diet? Were you in the hurricane zone? Hurricanes blow in, and cause an increase of a lot of allergens, molds and other irritants, some from far away, that could be causing additional stress on your endocrine system.

Could your narrowed artery or neurofibromatosis problems be causing it?

I've got significant heart disease, high blood pressure and asthma. For me, I've found out that many items that either touch my skin, or that I consume, or that I breathe, can cause my symptoms to get worse.

Regards, and best of luck in getting your BP under control again!

Re: sudden spike

Thanks for your reply. Nothing that I know of has changed. I have been thinking about this for a long time. I just can not figure it out. I went to the store yesterday and picked up some baby asprin, years ago my nephrologist had told me to take it, I had forgotten until doing some research. I am hoping this will help. This morning it was 155/95 which was pretty darn good for what it has been.

I try not to panic, because I know it will only make it worse. But there are times I can acutally feel the blood just pounding. It feels like I have just gone for a big run, except I am not out of breath. Some times I feel like the Doctors just don't move fast enough, at least not for me. He wanted to me to call Monday with a reading. Because I was not going to wait around a day or two for his phone calll back telling me what to do, I called and made an appointment. He is a great guy, but .... he isnt losing sleep like I am.

Any other suggetions from anyone?

Re: sudden spike

donttell,

Sometimes there's just NOTHING that seems to explain a flood of adrenal hormones (adrenaline and noradrenaline) that makes the BP go off the wall for awhile.

I've just learned not to run off and fiddle drugs at these times, and I just ride them out with patience. Then, just as mysteriously, things settle down.

I HAVE made the connection that the high BP times often coincide with my feeling vaguely jittery and anxious, sometimes without an apparent cause.

I think it's just the HUMAN CONDITION.

Post Re: sudden spike

Hi,

I too have had a spike last night. I went to ER two months back and had high BP of 170/115. Doc sent me home after taking all tests showing I was fine. I had an abnormal ECG but he felt it was because of the high BP. I went to my doc and changed my meds from the one I've been taking for over 10 years also. I was on Atenolol and had an allergic reaction to it. Now I am taking Avalide 150 mg (samples) and have a doc appt. tomorrow. Last night, I wasn't feeling very well either so I took another 1/2 a pill that didn't help.

Today, I elected to stay home to rest and it is down to the same as you are 154/98 which is also good from what it was last night.

I hope you know you're not alone!!! I'm going tomorrow to see what else they can think causes this!
