Question Re: I got Spiro today!!!yah!!! but...

How long until you see a decrease in oil production while on spiro? Oh and since you guys are discussing birth control, I heard estrostep is the best one. And one more question: What kind of doctor should I go to get prescribed spiro? Derm, Gyno, Endo...? A few months ago, when I was at the derm, she told me she didn't want to give me spiro because she wanted to try doryx and retin-a micro. Well, I've been on doryx for four months and haven't seen any improvement, and my skin is still extremely oily. She promised the retin-a would make my skin less oily too, and I think it just made it more oily. So hopefully, when I go to the derm next week, she will prescribe spiro!

Re: I got Spiro today!!!yah!!! but...

Thanks so much for the replies

I don't think anyone has said they had an initial breakout with spiro so that's good news

How about it being dose related though?
I think i'd ask my doctor for 200mgs because i'd just want to get straight in there and do the best i could to stop the persistant breakouts.Although;do you think that if you start straight off on 200mgs you could breakout in the beginning but maybe not on say 50mgs?

Thanks everyone

Re: I got Spiro today!!!yah!!! but...

Personally I wouldn't start off taking 200mg. My derm told me to start off with 50mg a day and after a week to check my blood pressure and if it was normal then I should up the dosage to 100mg. I know that Spiro is a safe drug to take, but to start off with 200mg may mess with your blood pressure. Just my opinion though.

Thanks for your concern I hear what you're saying. It's kind of like i'm more concerned about my skin than my blood pressure as awful as that sounds! It's terrible i know!
Has anybody started on 200mgs?

Re: I got Spiro today!!!yah!!! but...

Hey Kelly1212!

My derm only started me on 25mg/day. I was pretty upset at first, but I would rather be safe than sorry. I am supposed to have a follow-up appointment in a couple of weeks where I was hoping to have my dosage increased.

However, my derm's office is only open on weekdays, and I am a college-student who is only available on Saturdays! I am worried that he won't refill my Spiro prescription or up my dosage without seeing me and checking my blood pressure. If that is the case I will have to wait until Christmas Break or find a new derm!

I'm going to give his office a call on Monday. I think 25mg is good as a starting point, but I want to see what 100mg can do for my skin!
