Wink Re: Adult Tonsillectomy &

Hi
Just had my tonsils out on Dec 6th-- five days after my 24th b-day. And happy to report that I am doing fine- actually happy that I didn't find this website prior to having mine out... some of you guys have had some pretty horrific experiences and I might have been more wary about getting this done.
For me, days 1-3 were way easier than I thought they were going to be-- my surgery was @ 8:30am and I was discharged from the hospital @ 10:00am. The pain was relatively low, but took the meds anyway-- didn't want to risk having something wear off and have a rude realization that my pain was being masked. I was able to eat soup with noodles almost immediately following the surgery-- had mash potatoes that same night too.
Day 4 & 5- Pain increased a bit-- still doesn't match some of my really bad cases of toncillitis... haven't ventured to try chips or anything, but can eat pastas and soft breads
Day 6- pain was pretty constant... not unbearable, but considering nothing to complain about either... Went out to a restaurant (actaully the 2nd time I've been since my surgery) and had enchiladas-- stayed away from the salsa just to be safe, but got my meal down. Had a few sharper pains later tonight-- hope this is related to healing? It is strange to look down my throat and see two large holes on either side-- my tonsils were so big for 3 years (not even antibiotics or steriods would get them to reduce) that its wierd to have so much space!
Still not @ 100%-- I expect another week or so of throat discomfort, but God bless I've avoided having earaches and fever. Can't wait to be back in full capacity, but I return to work on Monday so at least I'll be starting "normal" life as opposed to sitting around at home.
In my experience I would say the mornings are definitely the hardest (tough to swallow and most pain), but after a few hours the rest of the day isn't that bad...
My advice would be to chew LOTS of gum-- supposed to reduce muscle spams which are linked to ear pain & drink lots of water-- I've been drinking around 10 glasses a day.
Can't wait to be completely healed and hoping the remainder of my recovery goes as smoothly
Best of luck to everyone!

Lynn

Re: Adult Tonsillectomy & Adenoidectomy Surgery

Hi all. First time posting here so be gentle. I had a tonsillectomy on Dec. 6th and I'm 30 years old. My hubby took the week off to take care of our 21 month old daughter. I was incredibly nervous about the surgery itself before but it went really smoothly. Hubby and daughter dropped me off at the hospital Monday at 7 am then he went to go drop our daughter off at daycare and come back. I was originally scheduled for surgery at 8:30 but the child scheduled before me had some virus and couldn't have surgery. By the time DH got back at 8:15 they were telling him I was done and in initial recovery. I had some drugs for nausea and some more morphine before they moved me to the other recovery area. There I hung out with hubby and was doing incredibly well. I knew I was drugged by was amazed at how great I felt. I was given a big old jug of Roxicet and liquid zithromax and sent on my way by noon.

It's been downhill ever since! I count the minutes until my next pain med dose and I swear I'm going to run out. I laughed when we got it thinking I'd never touch that much. I drink plenty of water and more warm tea. Until my scabs started falling off I could eat popsicles and ice cream. Every night my dh has gone to Cold Stone Ice Creamery to get me a chocolate malt for dinner. I let it thaw quite a bit then can drink some of it. I tried some noodle soup tonight and am regretting it terribly. I know there's more scab to lose and am dreading it since it burns like heck when they fall off! I'm also taking celebrex for the pain as well. I know it will get better and reading this board makes me feel better knowing that it is going to get better. I just never dreamed it would suck this bad.

I hope I'm not frightening anyone with an upcoming surgery! I just want to know if anyone else is having it this rough. Please tell me I'm not alone!

Nikki

Re: Adult Tonsillectomy & Adenoidectomy Surgery

We had our surgery on the same day! I had my first experience with scabs falling off last night-- OUCH... talk about having sharp pain! And a rather substantial scab fell off during my sleep last night and this morning is NOT fun- my throat feels so raw that I can't swallow without a grimace.
I'm also still on my pain meds-- trying to ween myself off them as I return to work tomorrow-- little worried though becuase my supply of meds is low... don't know if I should call in another prescription or but I'm really hoping I've already been through the worst! Does anyone have a day when they were noticably better or has it just been a gradual progression??

Re: Adult Tonsillectomy & Adenoidectomy Surgery

Imp, nice to know I'm sharing this wobbly boat with someone. I was up most of last night losing bits of scab too. I'm currently not talking and it feels kind of like I drank acid. It seems like there is so much more scabbing in there though. Makes me wonder if I had really deep tonsils or something and one side is definately healing faster than the other. Good luck with work tomorrow! I can't imagine going to work feeling like this. I stay at home with our toddler but we're sending her to daycare all next week so I can try to heal as best I can before the holidays. I don't really miss the holiday baked goods this year but we'll be traveling to FL next month and I hope to be able to eat lots of shrimp and fish! Oh, and I'm cheating for Christmas dinner. We ordered the whole meal from an upscale grocer. I'm sure I'll be fine but I just don't want the stress of cooking for a dozen or so people on top of trying to finish Christmas shopping.

I'm dreaming about food! Someone tell me how great it is to bite into a nice big piece of pizza or a cheeseburger!

Re: Adult Tonsillectomy & Adenoidectomy Surgery

I am a nervous wreck about my surgery. My tonsillectomy is Tuesday, Dec. 15. I have to be at the hospital at 5:00am. My ENT MD gave me ATIVAN to take for the next few days to try and calm me down, but I don't think it is working. Someof your stories have really scared me. I would love to hear a success story.
