Re: Adult Tonsillectomy & Adenoidectomy Surgery

I just found out from my insurance that everything is approved for my Dec. 27th tonsillectomy. Seems very real now, I've been doing my best not to think about it. I have to admit, I was hoping my insurance would deny it. I hate the looks of pity I get from people when I tell them I'm getting my tonsils, and the responce I always seem to get "that's really rough on adults, isn't it?"- Like I want to Hear That!! Sorry, I must vent to those who understand, my friend are tired of hearing it.

Anarchist- I am so very glad to be hearing that you yourself are only taking off 5 days from work. Everybody I talked to said that I was crazy for only allowing my self that much time off work. I am sure that I will be ok to return to work. However thanks for writing about the 5 day off thing it was nice to know that I am the only one who can't get 10 to 15 days off. katlynn~ I got a call a week ago saying that my insurance approved the claim and that I am all set. I to am a little nervous about my upcoming Surgey. I mean I hear the same thing you hear wow isn't that rough on Adults and they make it sound like it is gonna be so super painful. I am waiting on the Hospital to call and confirm my time of Surgery and then I see my doctor on Tuesday for a pre-op appointment and then My tonsils come out Wednesday. I will be returning to work the day u have your tonsils out so I will post before that and keep ya posted with my recovery so maybe u can see that it isn't really that bad and that way you won't be so nervous going in to your surgery

Katlynn,

It's better than the response I got from some people (coworkers). What a big baby taking all the time off from work (2 weeks). Even though I had a note from the doctor explaining WHY I should take off at least two weeks. Some people are soooo rude!

Re: Adult Tonsillectomy & Adenoidectomy Surgery

Hi All, I'm having my tonsils taken out on the 28th after 6 months of putting it off and reading this board, noting that sometimes as much as 2 months would go bye without having a sore throat...

i am also having a nasal-anthal window (sp?) put in to help drain one of my sinus caveties (which i cannot find any usergroups about). I made my doctor do a CT scan of my head thinking that the awful headaches on one side of my head were from something other than my tonsils and apparently this sinus cavaity is having some small drainage problem. It's not entirely clear, but i hope as a 32 year old to finally have less sore throats and headaches.

I am taking 4 days off work, then there's the weekend of New Years.
Anyone have sinus problems too?
Thanks, Ariel

Re: Adult Tonsillectomy & Adenoidectomy Surgery

Hello everyone. Good luck to those having this surgery soon. I had my tonsillectomy done on Dec 6th. I'm still on a mostly liquid diet and am pretty weak and tired still but doing much better. I still have to limit the amount of time that I can talk or it gets pretty sore. I'm still on the pain medication but can go much longer between doses and have been able to lower the amount that I take. Sleeping is still the worst part of the pain even with a humidifier. The first 2 days after surgery weren't too bad and I thought "hey, I can handle this" before it all went downhill. Days 4-8 were the worst and it has been the worst pain of my life. In 2003 I went through 40 hours of labor before having a C-Section and I would rather go through that 3 times over than get my tonsils out again. I'm not saying that to scare anyone, just to tell you my expierence. I know a lot of people say to eat really cold things but I can't handle that since I lost the scabs. I drank a lot of warm tea and let ice cream mostly melt before I could eat it. I still can't handle noodles, mashed potatoes or applesauce though a lot of people handle those just fine. It's very hard to swallow with the pain and small sips are the way to go. I also started using chloroseptic spray to numb my throat and that helps. I didn't use it until after my scabs came off. Now I just have a few patches of thin white film in the back of my throat and my uvula is starting to shrink. I wasn't prepared for the skin to slough off the back of my tongue and that was a surprising thing so if it happens to you don't be worried. One last thing about the medication. I was/am on Roxicet and when maxing out the doses it became very difficult to urinate. Not painful or straining but rather just sitting there a long time waiting for it to happen. Nothing to worry about, just another twist I wasn't expecting.

All that said I do not regret having my tonsils out but wish to God that I could have been sedated completely to heal for about a week! I know a lot of people breeze through this and I hope that's the case for all of you. If it doesn't, just know that you're not alone and others have had a tough time too. It's not fun and I miss the holiday cookies and baked goods but am dying for a good cheeseburger or pizza!

Good Luck and fast recovery vibes to everyone!
