What would be the cause for this...

I have been breaking out in cystic acne on my chin the past 5 months. I dont know what is causing it, or why im getting it all of the sudden. It hurts really bad, not to mention it brings my self esteem down. The rest of my face is clear and smooth...my chin used to be the part of my face that broke out when I was in middle school...but went away until 5 months ago (Im 21 now).
What do you think might be causing it, and how can you stop it?

Are you a girl? If so, it sounds like hormonal acne. Are you on BC or made any changes to your hormones lately?

Re: What would be the cause for this...

I am a girl.. Im 21, and was on Nordette (bcp) for 2 years and it seemed to completely control my mild acne... Then my insurance switched me to Levora and I think thats what made me start breaking out. Now Im off of Levora for about 3 months...and Im still getting the breakouts..So I dont know if it just screwed my hormones up or what... So Im going to try Nordette again and see if it helps..Or I might try a different bcp. Any ideas on what one is best? She gave me estrostep fe at first, but I read alot of negetive things about it..So I asked to try Nordette before I try that one to see if it levels things out.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
And to fixme- I understand.. Its kind of worse for a guy because you cant really wear make up to hide anything.. But dont worry, itll go away when you get a little older. I refuse to go to a derm because all ive ever heard is that they make your skin worse, or that the antibiotics they give work..and then the acne comes back with a vengence.

Re: What would be the cause for this...

You should go to a dermatologist if it bothers you. Antibiotics work, but your acne really needs to be the result of bacteria, not really hormones. Antibiotics in my opinion are a waste because it really does a job on your stomach and they usually don't work all that well, plus you have to schedule your meals around taking the pills. They do work but for me they didn't work 100% and would stop working after a few months.

I think age plays a big part in how bad the acne 'comes back with a vengance'. If I hadn't gone to the dermatologist I think my skin would have gradually gotten worse, but because I went on antibiotics for a little while I bought myself some time (not a lot) and so I just kind of picked up where I left off. I eventually thought the same thing that you did, that antibiotics just make it worse.... well needless to say I stopped with antibiotics and absolutely lost all control of my acne. Retin A worked alright for me, and Accutane by faaaaar worked better than anything I've ever taken. It is drying me out pretty bad but my skin is flawless otherwise.

Anyway, I think you should find out for yourself about derms and antibiotics before you give up on them. Every person is different, maybe you will have better luck.
