Re: Forteo

My Mom is in alot of pain. Doctor said there are small fractures up and down her spine. Not from falls but just from deteriation. I don't think her pain is being managed as well as it could be. It's hard to see your Mother in pain and literally deteriating before your eyes. Just not sure if Forteo is worth the risk. I don't put a whole lot of faith in Doctors these days. I will be going to Doctor with her soon. I want know as much as possible about her options.

Re: Forteo

She should see a pain specialist. I have a friend that gets those spine fractures and she is on Neurotin and something that is usually used as an antidepressant but I can't remember which one. It is one of the older ones. It is being used for pain now and she said it works very well. She goes to a pain specialist and also get shots in the spine when she has these problems. Spinal block or something like that. Sorry, having a senior moment tonight.

Re: Forteo

Serena - I also watched my Mom deteriorate before my eyes so I know how you feel. She had compression fractures in her back due to severe osteo. Don't know how Forteo would work for this, was never an option. Pain doc's can be helpful but I found they were not all that great. My Mom ended up on Morphine, liquid so she could control the dosing. It is a tremendous task, so hard to watch a loved one in pain, it is almost experimentation to find what works best. Best of luck and let me know if you need to talk......

Osteo causes great pain. I have been to the best endocrinelogist in Ar and Tx--they said it wasn't known that osteo caused pain until drugs like Fosomex came out, and those that could take it and it helped also had amazing pain relief. All the drugs by mouth caused me to have GI bleeding, so I took Aredia IV for 5 years. It just stablizied me--no new bone mass. It helps most and I haven't read on this site where anyone has taken it. I am just a difficult case. It gave me such pain relief. My dad suffered with osteo, and he was always in great pain. Osteo is what killed him and his sister. They were in their 80's--- their minds were great, but body destroyed by osteo. I was diagnosised at 42---I am now 57. I just started forteo and am really worried. I just don't know if I am willing to stay on this stuff for 2 years. I am raising my 2 grandchildren--6 & 2, my husband is 59 and has alzheimer. We keep trying to get him a pet scan, but ins won't pay and VA won't do. He had a brain spec.
Anyway, I was surprised when some said osteo didn't cause pain. Also, someone mentioned the hump on the back. We have a hospital in Little Rock that has a procedure that corrects the hump.
I just started reading these sites due to Forteo. I don't have much time with the children. I think prayer is the only reason I haven't had a facture. The 2 year old has always been big and I still have to lift him. He is 38lbs now. Not fat just a tall big guy.
