another cystoscopy update

Hello again. Just thought some of you may be interested in an update on my husband. He had a radical prostatectomy in June and had complications due to what may have been a reaction to the latex catheter. We spent the summer trying to get him to pee, and the fall trying to get him not to! He just had his third cystoscopy today, and the doctor found 2 strictures and thinks there could be more. So now he will have a surgical procedure to clear the scar tissue under general anaesthetic which will require another 3 days with a catheter. Ouch. Now we know only to go for the non-latex variety. I don't really have any questions, just thought some of you regulars would remember us and would be interested. (I know rfj120 will sympathize!)It has been a really long road for us, although for the most part he is doing quite well. Thanks for listening.

Re: another cystoscopy update

Hi again Liane. I am so sorry to hear your man is not out of the woods yet. He (and you) have really had to put up with far more than your share. You're going where most of us have not had to go before. I sure hope this is the final procedure and there will be no further roadblocks on the way to full recovery.

I recently had my one-year follow up (my RRP was Jan. 26 '04) and am a bit concerned since my PSA is .04; six months ago it was 'undetectable'. But my uro says all is as it should be. I'll be waiting anxiously for my next six month test.

Everything is pretty normal in the urinary dept.: just very slight dribbling if I'm straining at something. Unfortunately very little improvement on the sexual side. Yesterday, after popping a Levitra the day before, I woke with a very modest and short-lived erection. Its bizarre what gives you joy at this stage of the game.

All the best!

Thanks, you made me laugh! Those PSA tests are quite the waiting game, aren't they. My husband's was .009 @ 6 months, and is due for another the first week of March, so like you we are a bit anxious. One step at a time seems to be our philosophy, and it seems to help. Thanks again.

Re: another cystoscopy update

There was a suspicion cancer may have started to spread which is why extra tissue was removed (including nerves unfortunately) on one side. The pathology results after surgery, I was told, showed no evidence that cancer had spread beyond the prostate.
