I was looking up Butalbital in my mother's drug book (she's an RN) and it says it can interact with oral contraceptives. Now I'm scared!

Do any of these prescriptions interact with the pill to the point where they will make it ineffective? Physical side effects are a concern, but not the main priority to me.

Does anybody know? I would definitely, although reluctantly, ditch the painkillers if neccessary, but I need to take the Inderal no matter what..

None of those pills will decrease the pills effectiveness. There have been reports of mentrual abnormalities when taking butalbital and birth control pills (including pregnancy), but it's very unlikely. It's not a major interaction like penicillins and birth control.

Re: Interactions with Birth Control?

Inderal and ortho tri-cyclen- no probelms/no interactions.

But regarding butalbital and ortho tri-cyclen taken together, your body may process the estrogen more quickly, thereby decreasing the effectiveness of the Pill. Although GLS said it's unlikely there IS a risk of pregnancy. Pregnant is pregnant.. You might want to discuss this one with your doctor.

Are you taking the Inderal for hypertension? If so, you should also know that Inderal (beta blocker)taken with a barbiturate (butalbital) may interact. The butalbital decreases the effects of the Inderal somewhat, possibly causing your pulse rate to be higher and your BP to increase. But as long as your BP is being monitored and all is okay, then don't worry.

Re: Interactions with Birth Control?

You are 17 and have been diagnosed with hypertension???
Not only strange, but almost unheard of.

Any young person who presents w/ elevated blood pressure should be evaluated for secondary causes of hypertension, such as kidney disorders, ((particularly renal artery stenosis) or adrenal gland disorders.
Before putting you on Inderal, did you have a kidney scan? Not just an MRI but a special nuclear renal scan.
That and a 24-hour urine test would be absolutely mandatory before saying a 17 year old has primary hypertension.
