Re: Cystic Acne, who else has it?

GirlyGal- Youre welcome!! I know- it's very confusing and alot to handle. Its a huge decision and I'm still not 100% clear on what to do. I'm SO afraid to have a bad initial breakout- but i'm also afraid of breaking out in general. At least with Accutane- yea you break out bad- but theres an end in sight-basically, ya know?
But- I just dont want to go through all this, pay all the money, potentially risk my health- and then have my acne come back 6 months later ya know?

Re: Cystic Acne, who else has it?

hey juici! i reacted waaaaaay worse from the low dose than the higher one i'm currently on (80mgs/day). crazy, eh? my nurse said she'd never seen anything like it, and the doc said it was definately uncommon. he even tested the pimple ooze (so gross!) for a staph infection (negative), that's how bad it was. i bawled my eyes out, in his office, for an hour. i am mostly clear now, just a coupla little bumps, nothing really, but i do have the red marks everyone talks about, and i'm getting kinda red from all the peeling. i never thought i'd see the day when i would use moisturizer on my face 4 or 5 times a day! the red covers up pretty easily with makeup, but the flaking is a bit more tricky a process: cleocin lotion, murad lotion, makeup, lotion patpatpat, check, lotion patpatpat, check, f-it, juuuust walk a-w-a-y.

my face was so hideous i would basically hide all the time, baggy clothes, like a slob (but squeaky clean!) all the time. i have so much more confidence these days, it's like a miracle. i even caught my son's kindergarten teacher (a 35yo, cutie-man) checking me out last week! i'm very happily married, but that was such a boost for my trompled ego, i can't even tell you. i feel like i'm finally on the road to getting my life back. i've even been working out. i have been getting some backache, but it's been so helpful for my state of mind i refuse to give it up.

acne sucks major. a good, really honest relationship with my derm has been one of my best weapons in this struggle. i like to make him work! *lol* but this board has been, hands down, just the best. misery loves company, right? but there is nothing like losing the feeling of being utterly alone in a horrific battle, which this has been for me.

btw, do not drink on the tane!!! i partied it up saturday night with some girlfriends (which i never would have done, be seen in public, on a sat night?! a month ago), had four drinks, and was terribly hung over all day sunday, and had a headache all yesterday. ugh!

Re: Cystic Acne, who else has it?

Arock-
Well that's sort of what happened to me when I started Retin-A Micro. My derm said I reacted really badly to it, and my breakout was BAD. I mean- I had 10 cysts on my face, along with cheeks full of under-the-skin zits and I had never broken out there before.

I wanted to ask you- before you got on Accutane..What were you using? Had you used anything directly before going on it? I was thinking that since I already had a Retin-A breakout, and Ive been using it for a few months- AND Im on antibiotics- perhaps my breakout wont be too severe because for the most part, my pores are clear? Or does that seem like total BS?

Lately- Ive been noticing, when I get a cyst- after a few days, it has this little tiny white *** in the middle- and if I press on it- A plug will come out. My derm told me that this would happen because Retin-A loosens all those plugs that lead to breakouts. It was like...the weirdest experience of my acne-career. Haha- I pushed on it, and this"T" shaped plug came out- and the cyst immediately seemed to calm down..it was like I removed the core of it. Is that basically what Accutane does??
Do you think that you reacted better to the higher dosage simply because the lower dosage pushed out whatever was under there..and then the higher dosage took over and eliminated the rest?? Some people have horrible breakouts from 20 mgs. Im scared to take it based on the initial breakout.

Re: Cystic Acne, who else has it?

juicy,
i was on minocine before the accutane, and cleosin lotion, but they weren't doing much for me. i hafta say, seriously, the absolute worst thing that i did was to not call the derm's office when i started getting the bigguns. if i had addressed it three weeks sooner i could likely have saved myself a lot of pain, and the big hickey looking things on my jawline- so sexy! i should have spoken up, gotten them injected, gotten my dosages upped right away.

my opinion is that the lower dosage was just enough to freak my skin out w/out doing what it's supposed to. make sense? my skin didn't get any drier, i just got big cysts, and lots of them. i think that if i had gotten to a higher dose sooner it would have dried my skin out more effectively. this really has been a pain the the rear, but going in to have them injected regularly has been just what i needed. my reaction was so much worse from the 20mgs than from the 60mgs, and the 80mgs is kicking butt. but again, getting them injected kept it under control, as does the prednisone.

a lot of people use differin or retin-a micro while they're on the tane. i can't use that stuff, apparently i'm senstitive or something, but i tried to use differin a few years back and couldn't stand the itching- too intense. but if you're already using it with some success then you might continue w/it on the tane. have you already started taking accutane at the 20 mg dose? and the antibiotics too? that seems unusual to me, but i'm just a user of this stuff, no expert by any means.

btw- you have to stop the antibiotics (as i understand it) when you start the accutane if you're using bcp's, b/c it makes them less effective, w/the whole pregnancy thing. the initial breakout should be a real concern, but liek i said earlier, my reaction was NOT TYPICAL, it was VERY UNUSUAL!!! the nurse had NEVER seen anything like it before, lucky me! most people start to clear up right away, just keep in mind!

and to answer your ?? about the cysts and their core, i have found the same thing to be true on the accutane, but it makes the skin so fragile that you don't want to be poking about too much or it will break and bleed. i have a hard time keeping my hands off, especially now that it's all flaky (never scrub w/a washcloth, btw, bloody mess, followed by scabby face will surely ensue!). i use those daily cleansing cloths by aveeno in the a.m. for that, really helps w/out the icky mess and terrible stinging pain and nasty scabs, as hot as those were! it is weird tho, a little plug will just sorta pop outta there, the pain is instantly gone and the thing goes away in a day or two. sometimes i'll get a li'l itch on my face, scratch it, and scratch a plug off! go figure. i don't know what the he** is going on, but it does seem to be working, albeit rather slowly. sorry this is so long!

Re: Cystic Acne, who else has it?

I had a Fotofacial about 4 weeks ago. It really helped with the cystic acne and the scarring. Still have a couple, but the number is down severly. Warning though, for me, the first few days to week after the Fotofacial I saw a major increase as everything that was lurking under the skin came to the surface.
