gerd and osteoporosis medicine

Hi,
I've been on Actonel for osteoporosis for about 6 months. I take it every other week instead of weekly because of my gerd. Last week about 6 hours after taking the medicine I started to eat and I had a spasm and the food was stuck.
I tried to relax and be calm and the food finally went down. Now I have this raspy feeling from my chest up to my throat. Could this possible be gerd related? I take pepcid about three times a week but it does not seem to be helping the problem. I know that I have to get off of the Actonel but I don't know what else I can do to help this problem.

Thanks for any advise you can give.

Pat

Re: gerd and osteoporosis medicine

I didn't take Actonel but Fosamax gave me a fit with my GERD. After a month I couldn't take it anymore and my rheumatologist switched me to Didronel cycles for my osteo. It sounds like your doc needs to switch your osteo drug or you need something stronger for your GERD other than Pepcid. If you still have the problems after medicine changes then further evaluation needs to occur.

Wink Re: gerd and osteoporosis medicine

Hi Shandi,

Can you tell me about didronel and how you are doing on it?

My doctor wants to put me on a medicine called Forteo for the osteo. It is given in a daily injection.

I also have a problem with the PPI's for the Gerd and can only use Pepcid or Zantac which don't really help much. I seem to be "between a rock and a hard place" which I"m sure a lot of us with Gerd and other medical problems have to put up with.

Thanks for letting me rant, it makes it a little better.

Re: gerd and osteoporosis medicine

I too have osteoporosis and had tried all of the prescription drugs for it. I could not do any of the drugs. I actually believe it was the Fosomax that started my GERD. I had never had any problems with indigestion, pain, etc until a year of using the fosomax. I quit all osteo drugs by mouth. My Endocrinologist started me on IV Aredia treatments and I have them every 3 months for the osteoporosis. I take 50,000 units of Vitamin D a week which is all in one pill. I take 2000 miligrams of Calcium citrate. I have been doing this for a year now. I just had my bone scan and the Osteoporsis has improved. This has been the only treatment that showed any improvement for me. Now, for the Aredia I want to tell you it is a Breast Cancer drug given as IV therapy. My doctor explained that it was used to drive calcium to the bones so hopefully the cancer would not attack the bones so it also helps the osteo because we (osteo people) are lacking in calcium in our bones. You can do some research on Aredia and see if you would want to try this avenue of treatment. It is scarey being injected with such strong chemicals in your body but heck you are doing the same thing by taking those caustic osteo drugs by mouth such as foxomax. I just wanted to prevent the broken bones as well as have some relief for GERD. I now take 3 Nexium pills a day for the GERD.
