Re: need help on my LDL !

Hi Kadey -

I'm sure the men on this board are rolling their eyes over posting a recipe, buy hey, whatever works. The book I read suggested eating three muffins a day, but I only eat two a day. So, there is a possibility of a greater LDL reduction if you were to eat three a day. One day I'm going to experiment with that. In any case, this is the recipe I use.

2 1/4 cups uncooked oat bran
1 Tbsp baking powder
1/4 cup packed light brown sugar
1/4 cup chopped walnuts
1 1/4 cup fat-free skim milk
2 large banana(s), mashed
2 Tbsp light corn syrup
2 egg white(s) or 1/2 cup egg beaters

Mix first four ingredients in large bowl. Mix next four ingredients in separate bowl. Add wet ingredients to dry ingredients and mix well. Bake in 12 muffin cups at 425 degrees for 17 minutes. Store in refrigerator.

Tip: I usually grind the oat bran in my food processor so that the muffins have a more cake like texture.

Hope you enjoy them.

Re: need help on my LDL !

Dmwojnar,

Thanks for posting the recipe - don't think anyone will have 'rasied eyebrows' over it. I'll let you know how they come out...

By the way, please follow Lenin's suggestion about Red Yeast Rice.

If you are taking it, YOU ARE TAKING A STATIN (lovastatin)...

Wha's more, you are taking an unregulated, low-or-no-quality-control version of a statin. I'd be much more concerned about taking RYR than any statin available via prescription. In fact, I'd take Baycol before I would take RYR...

If you are on RYR - you really need to have bloodwork done regularly to make sure it is not harming your liver!!!

Just a word of warning...

Re: need help on my LDL !

Hi Hubble Rules -

I just wanted to let you know that I am not taking red yeast rice. However, I did buy some niacin, but because I'm always afraid to take anything, I haven't tried it yet. So, even that was probably just a waste of money.

I've been trying to improve my numbers through exercise and diet, but I know that once I'm through having children, I will most likely be on a statin drug. Until then, I'm on my own.

Well, I hope the muffins work for you. My husband, who has good cholesterol numbers, eats them everyday just because he likes them. Go figure!!

Have a good day and thank you for thinking of me.

Re: need help on my LDL !

dm..that looks like a real tasty muffin, think I just might break down and make some too. Hey, U might have started a new trend here, the COOKING to lower your cholesterol board.

I swore I was going to try the Niacin also, but still haven't bought it. I did go to a couple of pharmacies, but would U believe noone had any??? Either people are buying it up like crazy, or my stores stink. Tomorrow I have to go to Walmart, and I know they had some last time I was there, but just the sustained release type, and I have heard that is not a good one to get. Oh well, I will get a small bottle somewhere, but want a small dose also, so when I do break down and try it, will let ya know how it goes. I am so sensative to meds. it is pathedic.

Thanx again for the muffin receipe, and will let ya know how they come out. Hang in there, things just might get alot better....

BTW..I agree with Hubble about the RYR, I won't go that route!!

Just found out yesterday that my neighbor lowered his total cholesterol by using the fiber blend in addition to flax seed and 10 mg Lipitor from over 300 to 116. He started to wean from the Lipitor a couple of weeks ago and is planning to use just the fiber and flax seed by the end of April. I don't know about the specific Triglycerides, HDL & LDL numbers. Might be worth checking out.

Gail,

I checked out the product above, and it does look interesting. It's not cheap though...

In your experience, did most of those who used the product lose weight while on it (in addition to lowering their cholesterol levels)?

I would like to lose a few pounds, and weight loss generally has a positive impact on total cholesterol - especially triglycerides. I like the inclusion of plant sterols in the product ingredients - I don't eat nearly enough fruits and vegetables these days...

I don't want to get my cholesterol as low as the current guidelines stipulate (I think they're way too low ), but I would like to keep total cholesterol around 220 without drugs... I'm at about 235 TC right now... Would really like to increase my HDL and lower my LDL - more concerned about that than the overall level.

Take care,
