Amoxicillin, not right for me?

Alright, last week I went my doc, who said I had a sinus infection. First he tried to get me a Z-Pak since it would be the least ammount of antiobiotics for the shortest ammount of time...well, insurance wouldn't go for that. So I ended up on Amoxicillin 3X a day for 10 days. And he said to call in a few days if it wasn't working, and it isn't. So I called the nurse today--and she called my doc and then called in a perscription for Augmentin 2X a day for 10 days, with 1 refill, if needed. So my question is this? Does Amoxicillin like just not work for me, or what? Someone said I might be resitant to it, because like 2 years ago I was on it for 3 weeks straight, 2X a day. Or...did I wait to long to go to the doc, so Amoxicillin just couldn't get rid of what's going on? I waited about a month...lol... I guess I'm just wondering, for next time I need antibitics, should I try to get something other than Amoxicillin right from the get go? Although my snot hasn't been discolored in the last few days, all my post nasal drip has been thick still...and my sinuses and ears are killing me. Ugh.

Re: Amoxicillin, not right for me?

Midget,
Amoxicillian doesn't do alot for me either. Ive had my symptoms since November, took amoxicillian at first and it didn't help much, then a month or so later, I was put on prednisone for just a few days, it helped some but again it all came back. So I went to the Dr. yesterday, and had a long talk with her about my symptoms and how long its been going on. SHe prescribed me zithromax 2 x a day for 3 days, and then she wants me to repeat it. Also put me on allegra and flonase. Silly me hasn't started it yet, cause ive had alot to do and i don't know how its going to affect me, so i'm waiting for the weekend. Hopefully this will help, cause the next option is a CT scan to get a look at my sinuses. Hope this helps cause that could mean surgery. Hope the augmentin helps you.

Re: Amoxicillin, not right for me?

yeah, those resisistent sinus infections can be frustrating. I have had a sinus infection for a couple of months now. Was on biaxin which helped with most of it, but not all. Then doc put me on levaquin which started working but I developed an allergic reaction to it and I can't take it. I also can't take penecilin or amoxycilin or doxycyclin or tetracyclin or c chlor or tetracyclin. I'm not allergic to erthymiacin meaning that it lets me breath, but it does make me projectile vomit so I like to avoid it. Bactrim never works on sinus infections for me. I took zithromax once and it worked well. I think I am supposed to avoid things like cephalosporin too. I don't remember if I am allergic to those or not. Doctor didn't want to put me on anything else right now because it is a mild sinus infection but now that allergy season is here I miss breathing properly. I'll probably either need a CT scan or go see my old allergist. Aren't there any natural ways to kill these things? I'm already doing saline rinses too which sometimes help.

Re: Amoxicillin, not right for me?

My insurance wouldn't pay for a Z-Pak...So from now on, should I just tell doctors that Amoxicillin doesn't work for me or what? I mean can they like make a note of that in my chart? Or is it just not working this time? This is what's confusing to me. Anyway...yeah...it's frusating. It's like some days I feel good, then other days it's like oh boy...here we go again. :P

Edited--Good luck with the Flonase! That's helped me tremendously, just doesn't seem to be working at the moment, do the the infection. I'm a little curious as to why it didn't keep me from *getting* the infection to begin with...but oh well. But yeah, the majority of the time, that stuff is *great*

Hey Midget,

96 percent of sinus infections are fungal related...so your doc needs to prescribe an anti-fungal med....antibiotics don't kill fungus...good luck, and are your infections recurring???
