costochonritis??

Hello, I'm trying to get info on what I may be experiancing. I'm a 26 y/o male w/no major health problems. I seem to be experiancing symptoms of costochonritis. I have seen my PCP and a GI specialist thinking my pains were associated with GERD because I sometimes her heartburn. I suggested an endoscopy just to make sure but the GI Dr. said my symptoms were nothing to be concerned about. He said it may be costochonritis due to working out. I did a little research on costochonritis and from what people have been experianceing with their costochonritis, I'm not sure if it matches me. I'm experiancing dull, annoying pains that seem to be coming from my sternum, or around that general area. This is not a sharp pain but rather the kind of discomfort one would have with bronchitis, the dull, full, and congested feeling you have in you chest with that illness. The pain does not become worse when pressure is applied to the sternum like others have said and the discomfort comes and goes. I also get the dull feeling if I take a deep breath and hold my breath and is usually around the top of the sternum. The discomfort only lasts for about a couple of seconds then goes away until I take another deep breath. I had a chest x-ray done just to make sure I didn't have an enlarged heart or something and everything came back fine. If anyone has the same symptoms or if anyone has any idea of what this may be I'd appreciate it.

Re: costochonritis??

Do you ever notice this pain when you swallow or talk? Recently, I have been having the same type of dull/pressure in the middle of my sternum, I notice this when I swallow or try to talk loudly. I initially thought it was some sort of congestion, but I"m not stuffed up. I was given Aciphex for reflux and it's helped with other symptoms, but this is still lingering.

Costo is an inflammation of the rib cage. There are fibers and muscles between each rib and sometimes when you move or stretch, they become inflamed and painful. Costo is very common and they even have a board where other people suffer the same thing. Just go to a search engine and type in "costochonritis threads or group". Unfortunately, not much can be done, but anti-inflammatory drugs sometimes seem to help. Good luck : )

Re: costochonritis??

I have costo and it sucks. During the season changes it is the worst. I believe it has now turned into fibromyalgia as well. I take advil and if it is real bad i take hydrocodone. I am on Cymbalta also because of anxiety when i have a flare. I think it is a heart condition. Cymbalta helps with th worry. Good luck and REST.

Me.
