I can help simplify the other drugs that are available.
Most docs prescribe stimulants for individuals with ADHD. The majority are based on the generic form of Ritalin (which is methylphenidate). Ritalin, Ritalin LA, methylphenidate, Concerta, and Metadate are all the exact same medication but with different delivery systems so that they are effective for varying lengths of time.
Adderall and Adderall SR are the same medications which consist of "mixed salts" of amphetamines which means they are stimulants.
Dexedrine is made entirely of one of the amphetamines in Adderall.
They are usually tried in that order because it is generally thought that Dexedrine is the strongest, then Adderall, then methylphenidate. Physicians may choose one over the other, though, based on an individual's symptoms and history.
Cylert is another stimulant that is rarely used because of links to irreparable liver damage.
Wellbutrin and Effexor are both technically antidepressants but are occasionally used for ADHD.
Very seldom, but occasionally, we'll see Catapress and/or the anticonvulsants (tegretol, carbatrol, etc) used for a hyperactive individual especially if they also have a tic disorder. Risperdol, Seroquel, or Zyprexa are usually chosen when the hyperactive patient also has rage/violent behaviors.
These are not hard and fast rules and, obviously, not the "whole story" but it will give you the general idea of the different meds. Hope it helps!
