Question Can the pill be inserted in the vagina?

I am a little skeptical about this. I read an article about how the pill can be inserted up the vagina and it would be completely safe and effective. This is usually recommended for women who have the flu or vomit soon after the pill is taken. I asked my doctor if this was true and she has never heard to such a thing. Now i think about that NuvaRing and it seems like this can be true. It it possible? Would it desovle inside and cause irritation? How would it be absorbed in the bloodstream? Would a woman get the same side effects since it would be more local?

Thanks.

no i've never heard of that before but i know that you cannot insert the pill vaginally, it will do nothing for the effects of birth control. there is no way it would get into the blood stream and chances are your body would just either push it out, or it could dissolve i guess. now i know with the nuvaring, its supposed to be inserted vaginally, my friend is on it and loves it.

Re: Can the pill be inserted in the vagina?

Yes, you can absolutely insert the pill into the vagina and it will work fine. There is a pill I think in Greece that has the same ingredients as "Ovral" and it is used vaginally. It is absorbed through the bloodstream and bypasses the first liver pass as Nuvaring does. You are right, Nuvaring is doing EXACTLY the same thing. It might also depend on the formulation of the brand of pill as well. The progestin in Nuvaring is slightly changed for better absorption through the vagina.

From who's done it and it works,

Dip

PS You will get some folks on here that will swear it doesn't work and tell you NOT to do it. Just talked to another doc who has had experience with this.

Do you have any other info on this? Does it take long to be absorbed? when it dissolves does it ooze out? does it only have to be taken at night?

For what it's worth, there is a non-birth control estrogen tablet that is meant to be inserted into the vagina. It's mostly used by menopausal women, but it's a vaginal hormone tablet nonetheless.

Anyway, I've heard that this could be done, although I personally wouldn't try it. There haven't been many (or any well-done) studies performed on this technique. The pill is designed to be ingested, and that's how it should be done. However, I guess inserting it vaginally would be better than nothing. But, like I said, it'd reserve that for unique circumstances.
