URTI and asthma exacerbations...

I'm just wondering what you all do to keep out of hospital when you get a cold or flu?
It's so frustrating, I had a cold at the end of last month that triggered my asthma stayed in hospital for 2 days, last week I (or so my dr thought only b/c of high temp @ 40.1C) had the flu which landed me in hospital for 2 days with my first severe exacerbation. Had lots of ventolin, ventolin/atrovent and atrovent nebs, hydrocortisone, pred and salbutamol infusion + iv potassium & saline.
Is it normal for all asthmatics to get bad when they get an infection? Sometimes I wonder b/c I think the nurses/dr's @ the hospital I go to think I'm non-compliant. I do everything I'm supposed to, which isn't much double y dose of seretide (advair in USA) and start regular ventolin nebs every 4hrs as required.
Anyway, I've just had atrovent added to my meds (have to use one nebule 4x a day) so hopefully that'll work.
