Accutane and Sports

I'm thinking about taking a second course of accutane, but I have some concerns. Last time I took it I was recovering from knee surgery so there wasn't much I could do for several months. This time around I will be playing very competative rugby and I could see a few problems arising.

1. I heard accutane can slow down your healing/muscle recovery time.
2. I take a fair ammount of anti-imflamitories (Aleve, Advil, etc.) when playing sports and I know they're a little hard on your kidneys as it is.

The first time I took accutane (4 years ago) I remember the side effects only really bothered me for the first two months. I'm wondering if there's any creative way I can distribute the dosages to minimize the conflict with sports . . .

Re: Accutane and Sports

My son just started Accutane this week and he is in the middle of two a day practice for football. His doctor drew blood and will every month to make sure his triglycerides are ok b/c the Accutane is "digested" through the liver. Can't remember the exact phrasing but you get the picture. The other side effect that sorta worried me was joint pain b/c Accutane is so drying he said that the cushioning around the joints can sometimes become painful but that he rarely sees this. The doctor also said that sweating, etc. would be ok and even good b/c once again with the drying of the skin this would help keep the skin moist (in a gross way, lol). Hope this helps and good luck!!

Re: Accutane and Sports

i have bad joint and muscle recovery on accutane, but i've been on it since 11/11/04, and am at 80mg/day. i would suggest that, most likely, a low dose would be fine. also, i have found that a daily dose of fish oil helps somewhat with the joint pain. good luck!

Re: Accutane and Sports

arok -- if you don't mind me asking, how old are you? Reason why I'm asking is because my son is taking this and he is 15 and didn't know if you were his age or an adult dealing with the pain. thanks
