Life After Inhaled Corticosteroids and/or Singulair

I have read tons and tons of postings on the internet about children & adults rapidly gaining weight from inhaled corticosteroids (i.e. Flovent, Advair) and/or Singulair, along with the round face, bloated stomach, stretch marks, thin skin, easy bruising, etc. but nobody ever says what happens after stopping any of these drugs. Do people ever go back to normal? Do kids look like themselves again? Do any of the side effects disappear? Any experiences or info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Re: Life After Inhaled Corticosteroids and/or Singulair

Hi...I've used inhaled corticosteroids since the 80's....no weight gain, no moon-face..etc.

I do have bruising, but....I've ALWAYS had that because of being very fair/thin skinned.

I think the info you read was with oral....not inhaled.

Oral corticosteroids such as prednisone, prednisolone and ilk are taken orally and consistered systemic. Inhaled corticosteroids are considered topical because they are taken into the lung via the mouth.

Oral, not inhaled, are the side effects you're concerned about. Those side effects don't happen on the 10-day or 7-day tapered dosages from what I understand.

Hope this helps.

Re: Life After Inhaled Corticosteroids and/or Singulair

My three year old has been on inhaled steroids and intermittant oral steroids for the last year and a half as well as singular, zyrtec, zantac, xopenex, atrovent, and rhinocort and we haven't seen any of the symptoms you mentioned. If anything is a little on the thin side but doing well considering her severity of asthma.

I'd say check with your doctor.

Predisone is the only med for asthma that I know that will give you the round face. The round face usually goes away in a few days after stopping the med. I hate the fact that I can never get full when I am predisone and I gain weight. But it does help clear up the lungs and I can breath
