Re: Adult Tonsillectomy ???

You're not obsessing over it. It's natural to be scared. You're having surgery...that's always a serious matter.

They remove the tube in your throat before you wake up. You never even know that it's there. They put it in after you're asleep and take it out before you wake up.

Re: Adult Tonsillectomy ???

Hi Patty, the antibiotics will be a 10 day dose. You have to be sure that you pick this up from your pharmacist as close to your surgery as possible - as it only has a shelf life of 10 days once it is mixed in liquid form (so either the day of surgery or the night before). I ended up with an allergic reaction to the liquid form, so I had to stop it 2 days after surgery. After I stopped the anti-biotic - I ended up developing an infection, which I then had to go on flaygyl & cipro for 10 days in pill for, (that was at the end of week 2 of recovery) I am currently 5 weeks out from surgery and feeling much better, all anti-biotics are finished - but the big downer is that I can't taste much and it really sucks. (we have another thread going for those of us suffering from this side effect) worrysome, as some have not had their taste for 2, 3, 6 months and even up to 2 years. It is really something that is very very annoying and hard to deal with.

Sorry to get off on a rant there - as for the sleeping, I am a side sleeper, I can't sleep on my back for the life of me. But I found that it helps to have your head elevated a bit - 2 or 3 pillows should do. You have a lot of phlem after surgery and I found myself gagging and coughing up more when I didn't have my head elevated. Plus a humidifier will help, as your mouth tends to get really dry while you sleep.

Re: Adult Tonsillectomy ???

Thanks Peteyby!
The other scripts were for Roxicet liquid and Tylenol 3 liquid....I wonder if they burnt off your taste buds with the laser they used or something??? That is horrible...did your dr mention that was a side effect?

Re: Adult Tonsillectomy ???

Neither my doctor or my pharmacist mentioned anything about a 10-day shelf life for liquid antibiotics. I was on liquid Zythromax (the kind you only have to take for 5 days). I got it a couple weeks before my surgery and did just fine. I didn't get any infection at all. I have had no problem with taste after the first few days prior to surgery. Who knows.

Question Re: Adult Tonsillectomy ???

Last list of questions I promise....

The first day after surgery (Thursday) will I be able to get up and get the kids cereal & stuff by myself or is Wed night going to be a bad night with pain? I am just trying to figure out someone to help me with the kids...I've had lots of offers but don't want to take up other people's time if I would be feeling up to just hanging out on the couch & such....what time of day did you guys think was the worst?
Patty
