Unhappy 17 month old MRSA positive

My daughter was in the hospital for 3 days with what the Dr.s called an absess on her bottom. They cut the absess open and did a culture on it and had her on IV antibiotics for 3 days. The wound is open now and I have to clean it and pack it with gauze a few times a day, no small feat with a squirming and unhappy baby.
Well the culture came back today and I got a call saying it was MRSA positive and I need to make sure everyone washes there hands carefully and they put her on a new antibiotic called Clindamycin. I have looked a few places on the internet and it looks scary. She goes back to the Dr. on Thursday. It is so hard because she has diarrhea now from all the antibiotics she has been on but I need to keep her diaper area clean. Has anyone else been through this or may have some info for me?
Thanks
Lynn

Re: 17 month old MRSA positive

You need to call your doctor if your daughter is taking clindamycin and having diahrrea. An infection called pseudomembranous colitis could be the cause of the diahrrea. It's very serious if left untreated. It may not be anything serious, but better to be safe than sorry. Do a search for side effects of clindamycin and see what you think.

Re: 17 month old MRSA positive

Hello Lynn,

I suffered from a nasty abscess on my bottom when I was a baby - I think I was about 6 months old at the time (1970). The Plunket Nurse at the time felt that the Doctor had used a dirty needle when he had given me a vaccinnation. I became very unwell and the abscess had to be lanced. My mother said this was done in the Doctor's surgery and they extracted two and a quarter teacups of pus from it. I was put on medicine, and like you Mum was left with a great big gaping wound to try and keep clean in the most difficult of places to keep dry and clean. After it was lanced a whole lot of little abscesses started to appear around the site of the original abscess. According to Mum I used to spend a lot of time sleeping when I had this infection, and when I was awake all I could do was wimper with the little energy I did have. In my Plunket records on the growth chart it shows I lost a lot of weight at this time which is marked with "Nasty Abscess". The Plunket Nurse was so worried that she used to visit me twice a day.

Today nearly 35 years later I still have a 2 inch scar on my buttock and incredibly if it gets knocked it is still a tender spot.

Good luck with your little one and I hope she is feeling better real soon.

Re: 17 month old MRSA positive

HI,
I have a similiar case here. My 13 month old daughter had an abcess cut and drained today, the pocket being of "the size of a gulf ball" the doc said,
I have a long story to tell in regards to this mrsa..... My son who is now 2 1/2
first had a boil on his buttocks when he was 16 months old he was treated with an antibiotic cream. A few months later he had one on his chest around his nipple area. The first time I took him to the ER the second was the family doc who than treated him with augmentin antibiotic. He has had a few more on his legs and everytime I called the doc he would tell me to keep putting warm compresses and giving him the antibiotic cream, I had than took him to A.I Dupont Childrens and got no answers, they would not touch it because the area was too tender and swollen, well, what, a year later he has scars on his legs and now my daugter contracted this bacteria which is VERY scary. I had just found out today that this is MRSA. I have an appointment and have had it for a month now with childrens hospital of phila******a this friday, I am not going to jump up and scream mrsa when I go, I want to see if they know.
I am almost positve I have it, I had a c-section with my 13 month old daughter and probably contrated it while I was in the hospital, my son 16 months at the time. I also had a sutra in the incision and was treated at the facility my daughter was treated today. hmmmm I am soooo outraged that this bacterial infection is soooo overlooked!!!
No one knows or wants to talk about it, in the medical profession..... Why
The doctor that did the procedure on my daughter today told me that mrsa is nothing to be scared of and is superficial, I did all research tonight and hmmmm people are getting pneunomia and bone disease. If your daughter or anyone you know gets another boil or abcess than get all parts of the body checked as this can be fatal and spead to lungs, bones ect. I have an upper resperatory and have had it for about 3 days now and it is bad, I dont get sick, Ive been worried about my kids more than myself, I have to be seen and have total body scan done as I am scared that I may have an advanced stage of this MRSA. I am so mad that noone not even a well known and praised childrens hosp overlooked this months ago.
I will let you know the outcome of all.
I believe that this bacteria can be faught with the RIGHT kind of treatment,
my son has been on 3 types of antibiotic that has done nothing but suppress it, from what I read this bacteria feeds off of antibiotics and gets stronger,
I am going to pray and hope my son will be cured and that it hasnt gotten worse,
He hasnt had one in 3 months biggest gap yet, I am going to pray for my children and for all of the children that face this type of pain and the parents for the confusion, stress and hopelessness. I am here so worried.
My mother in law had these type of abcesses in the 1930's as a 6 month old infant she was later diagnosed with strepdiloccious which led to osteomylitis
which infected her arm, she was treated at the time with the "miracle drug"
penicillin. This bacterial wsa probably mrsa at the beginning stage,
I havent talk to her yet she is away on vacation,
be will go with me on friday with my son and daughter.
I hope we can or I know we will get the answers and correct treatments
needed.
Sorry if I just wrote a book,
Love to all
