Honestly afraid I'll die

I appreciate any help...I am desparate.
I'll make my health history brief as possible:
5 yr ago had nissen fundoplication for severe gerd.
Gerd now back with a vengance.
Gerd even when sleeping sitting up...wake up choking several times a night. (what's next...sleep standing up???)
I am getting over the third bought of SEVERE asthma.
I seem like I only have a bad cold. Sudden violent coughing followed by NO air in or out follows. Was lucky enough to have attack in ER last Monday nite and got er doc's attention.
I have had such severe coughing and asthma that my chest is in MONDO pain at all times. I must take Lortab just to barely maintain the pain.
Meds I am on: Nexium, Advair, Albuterol inhaler, steriod dose pack (and one steriod shot), lortabs, mucinex, highpowered antibiotic-Avalox (day 8).
I follow doc's instructions perfectly.
Gerd only getting worse. Asthma scarier than you can imagine.
Every night I go to sleep I am afraid I will wake up and can't cough out the stuff and will die.
Also, esophageal cancer seems to be a very real fear in my future.
Last time I saw my gastro doctor he said he can do nothing else to help me!
Oh yes, and I went to an asthma specialist in April. He did extensive tests and said my asthma is NOT from allergies.
I am really scared. This is my third case of bronchitis/asthma within a year's time due to aspiration in my sleep.
Any ideas at all???? Thank you

Re: Honestly afraid I'll die

There are tons of studies that show asthma is directly connected to GERD. How old are you? Are you overweight? Do you get regular endoscopies? Barrets Disease? Did you experience any relief from fundoplication? Sorry I need more information to be specific. Fundoplications generally only last a couple years. You may need another one and repeat fundoplications generally have good results. Good luck.

If your current GI doc says there is nothing more he can do then it is time to get a new GI doc!

I would make an appointment with an ENT doctor. GI docs are good but they aren't proficient in helping with GERD. Your symptoms can be relieved. I just don't think you have a very good doctor.

Re: Honestly afraid I'll die

I really feel for you. I has diagnosed with GERD and placed on Losec. This worked perfectly for about 12 months, then the GERD came back with a vengence to the point that I had constant burning, diahorrea, dark stools, shock symptoms/heart palpipations/faintness/shaking after dinner in the evening. I went back to my GI who increased my Losec dosage. I got worse so ended up at the GI's again who tried to say that all I was suffering from was an anxiety attack and to 'get with the real world' (oh why oh why do they do this?????) and that I was on the best drug in the world for GERD so therefore I could not possibly have reflux. YEAH RIGHT! I ended up getting sicker, and my GP sent me for a barium meal, and hello it revealed I had horrendous reflux even whilst on Losec, my sphincter was totally stuffed and that some part of my throat was all swollen up from the irritation which explained the lump sensation I had been complaining of. I was told to fire my GI which I did. That was not the end of the story. It was discovered by my own GP that I was allergic to Losec which explained all the shock symptoms after dinner which was when I took my second dose of Losec, and this made the reflux 100 times worse. So I stopped it and the problem completely disappeared.

Never give up. Change your GI. Sometimes things are that simple that they are overlooked. Good luck.
