She also has focalin that they want me to give her after school, but it does no good, so I dont even bother. How much does your son weigh? I wonder if because my Daughter is a little over weight if that is why she has to take such a high does for her age.
My son was on 54 mg. of Concerta too. He was only 8 at the time.

Re: Do kids ever grow out of ADHD?

tabmac,
you mentioned that she may not have the hyperactive part anymore. It is possible to just not have the hyperactive part anymore... that is what happened with my brother. As for growing out of it all together I suppose it is possible but I have had it since I was a kid and I still have it.

Re: Do kids ever grow out of ADHD?

My daughter is 15, and we have been on all the different meds. Adderall, Concerta, Adderall & Straterra together, and even Medadate. The one we seem to keep going back to is the Adderall XR. She also takes 50mg. of Luvox per day, and 25mg of Trazdone @ night to go to sleep. I worry about all the meds, but it seems she has to have them. I think as their bodies change with puberty and such, the meds affect them differently. One day the 30mg of Adderall she is on seems to be fine, and the next day it doesn't seem to work as well. I dont think they ever grow out of it, but they seem to get more mature and just learn to deal with it better. My 15yr old has a very smart mouth, but is very sweet at times. Just this year, I have been able to tell that she is beginning to act more her age, and mature some. Our Dr. told us, that is doesn't necessarily go by the weight, that it is kind of like a diebetic. You have to take as much of the medicine that you need, to get the brain where it needs to be. But all doctors are different. I just worry about her ever being able to live in a home outside of ours. She doesnt ever remember to take her med without me telling her. But maybe that will change with time.

Re: Do kids ever grow out of ADHD?

Hi Tabmac, I can't answer your question for sure but god I hope so! My daughter which is 9 sounds just like yours! The mouth-demands, orders, screams, yells, whines, swears, persists and then can be the sweetest little angle @ times. I had her on strattera (no good) and now trying Metadate 10mg to 20mg and starting 30mg today. Her teacher did send a note saying she was making some progress with her attention and focus in school but when she gets home after school she'll be ok then she gets little wired then she get into her agitated temper tantrum state. I think we need to get something for her in the evening. Any suggestions anyone! I hate the thought of giving a child uppers then downers but this poor little girl needs something I wish they would have known this is what I had when I was a child. I was just told I was a little hyperactive-though I am not now but came to the conclusion I do suffer from AADD. Let us know if u find something that works for your daughter. Take care Jules

I don't know the answer to the question but I do know from reading about tolerance/downregulation of brain receptors from taking long term medication that targets brain receptors might explain the need for the higher dosage, not necessarily the weight.

She also can be having side effects or even withdrawal effects while on the medication, withdrawals while having the med is called tolerance withdrawal...and things like irritability, aggression, depression, etc. are typical.
