Just got back from vacation, and I didn't behave

It's very hard to stick to a regular regime while away..especially if you are at someone else's house and they are doing the cooking. They know I'm diabetic..but potatoes and other starchy things were cooked. So instead of starving to death I ate things I shouldn't have. I did go out and buy things..mainly for breakfast and in between snacks..and I did pretty good with that. But of course my blood sugar ran higher than usual. How long does it usually take for your blood sugar to get back where you need it...if you start eating right again? I'm still new at all of this..finding out I was diabetic back in September. I take amaryl..twice a day.

I am also trying to keep my blood sugar within good numbers. My numbers are like a yo-yo some days. I hope other diabetics can coach those of us who need a little help.

Re: Just got back from vacation, and I didn't behave

My first suggestion is ask your host/hostess to provide a salad or veggies for you since your health is on the line or ask if you need to bring the salad or veggies. Many people think if they just dont feed you cake and cookies your sugars will be fine. Like them, even some diabetics dont realize which foods arent good.

Next, if you are going to eat the high starch than take a walk after dinner and first thing in the am and again after lunch..it should be a trade off. The sooner you can get back to regular exercise and a decent diet the quicker your sugars will return to normal.

Dont allow other people to mess w/ your health. You must make controlling your diabetes a priority and others will see that and follow your lead. I bet if you sat down to dinner and put nothing on your plate because you "shouldnt" eat that...it would never happen again. (obviously you would eat something even if you had to run to the store but most people have something else available.

Yes..you are right. I guess I didn't want to be rude..being so picky on what I eat. But some good news..I'm doing pretty good since I got back home!
