Re: 11 year old with UTI again

elddiwtsm whiteluluflower jeffreys mom,
thanks so much for all your thoughts, ideas, and experiences. I thought about the constipation thing too, even though she goes daily, I think its "hard" for her to go. I did bring it up to the dr. and he wasnt worried since we would have a movement every day. I guess I will see what these tests show. Could laundry detergent or softener sheets cause this? I dont know what else to do. She says her frequency is coming back, and she has 2 more days of anitibiotics.
She has been taking detrol for the frequency, but she says it makes her go more....
I will keep everyone posted, her test is next wed... and if anyone else wants to add anything, vent or share, I'd love to read. Thanks again!

Re: 11 year old with UTI again

Jeffry's Mom-
So good to see you on here again. I have thought about you and yours and wondered how you were doing. My daughter, also, had a recurrence in Sept and this one I actually believe could have been hygiene cuz she was finally alone and had to do the cleaning herself at school. We now make sure that she gets cleaned very well almost as soon as she hits the front door. That and we have a routine established with the laxative that doesn't interfere with school. That was an issue at first because I didn't want her to have to deal with pooping at school. But it know the look you mean about the hygiene. I think you remember my earlier posts when I was so frustrated about the lectures from the Pediatrician when I knew that hygiene was not the issue. Anyway, good to see you and I hope you son is improving, as well.

Tewfiddy-
Just 2 thoughts upon reading the other entries. 1-Whiteluluflower is right. Demand an antibiotic that will be effective for her particular bacteria. They can run tests to determine what antibiotic is effective for your daughter's infection. Just because Keflex (as an example) is what the book says is most effective, that does not mean that it is effective for your daughter. The doctors have been able to tell me if my daughter's bacteria is still sensitive to certain antibiotics by simply running a test on her urine. 2-The Pediatric GI doctor that I mentioned earlier told us that almost every case of recurrent UTI's in young girls that he has treated was directly related to their bowels or in most cases the size of their bowels. It didn't matter that my daughter went everyday-what mattered was the circumfrence and the hardness. My suggestion is that you make the Doctor take this thought seriously. I know that telling a doctor that you think he/she is wrong is very difficult but a good doctor will accept that we know our kids. Good luck...I will be standing right behind you in support. Re: 11 year old with UTI again

Both my daughters ages 7 & 9 have both had UTI's. They always put my girls on Septra. It works wonderful for them. Also my 7 year old just had the VCUG test & ultrasound last month. It was not as scary as I thought it was but very helpful for the doc. Try the drug Septra.

Re: 11 year old with UTI again

Thank you so much for all this great info. I have a 7 year old daughter who has had a few bladder infections over the years and now she has some new symptoms I was hoping you could help me with. First of all she had the usual pain with urination, blood in the urine. She was tested and put on antibiotics. Then it wouldnt go away so we had her put on another antibiotic. Her pain upon urination seemed to get better but then she woke up one night bawling her eyes out with extreme pain in her upper left side (which I assumed might be Kidney?) Anyway, she's a very tough girl and pain usually doesnt bother her so I KNOW she's not being wimpy or anything lol So I gave her childrens Motrin that first night (almost took her to the emergency room) then took her to the doctor first thing that next morning. They put her on a new antibiotic that would possibly help a kidney infection She had two nights actually with this extreme pain. Anyway, she seemed cleared up for about a month and now she's having the same upper left side pain again. She said that she was bleeding and had pain when she peed again. I looked and there was a little bit of blood dripping but after a couple of days of this she says that it doesnt hurt anymore. So I took her in to see the doctor AGAIN lol He said he saw nothing in her urine sample that day but set her up for that test involving the dye. The hard part is that I now have to wait for the paperwork to be sent to me for the referal while my daughter deals with this horrible pain about two times a day. It used to be about once a day but seems to be getting more frequent. I just dont know how long I should wait for this paperwork? She also doesnt take baths anymore and knows all the rules on wiping and such. I also just wanted to hear everyones advice on what this could possible be? I cant stand seeing her in so much pain and now she's starting to miss way too much school. Thanks!
