Re: Swallowing too painfull - Have bacterial tonsilitis

Hi triley I am going through the same exact thing right now I had to go to the ER because my throat is sooo sore, they prescribed antibiotics for me and also some ibuprofen as well I started my antibiotics today I was prescribed 825mg amoxicillin, the pain is awful I know it is, I had cold chills and had a really high fever my body was soo achy, when I was in the ER they put a IV in my arm and gave me the antibiotic like that for a whole day, all of the other symptoms are gone except for the sore throat, just finish all of your antibiotics even when you start to feel better so it won't come back, and as soon as you feel better get a new toothbrush so the infection won't come back.. hope you feel better soon...

Re: Swallowing too painfull - Have bacterial tonsilitis

Sorry you are in so much pain. My daughter had the same thing and the doc told her she could try the chloraseptic spray that numbs your throat. Then before we left the office the doc changed her mind and prescribed something called "Magic Mouthwash" (Yes it is actually called that!) The mouthwash had benadryl, maalox (to coat the throat) and lidocain in it. They mix it at the pharmacy. My daughter said it didnt taste the best but then nothing did to her at that point, but it sure helped with the pain.

You might want to try the chloraseptic spray and if that doesnt work, ask your doctor if there is something you can use for the pain.

Hope you are feeling better soon!

Re: Swallowing too painfull - Have bacterial tonsilitis

TRiley,

Hope the pain has let up some.....if not, call your doc and get a stronger antibiotic. Amoxicillin is a low grade antibiotic....there are definitely better meds....also ask, or rather insist on something for pain. There's absolutely no reason for you to be in excruiating pain. Did you have a strep test? Even if you did, sometimes the strep test that's done in minutes in the office won't show positive for strep until the next day...if the doc's office hasn't discarded the test. If you feel like you are swallowing razor blades, then you more than likely have strep. Don't play around with strep!

Re: Swallowing too painfull - Have bacterial tonsilitis

Thanks for the great replies. Sorry to hear you have it worse admired1, must be real horrible cause I couldn't imagine it have been hurting any more. Hope your condition improves real soon!

As for me, I went back after noticing after 2 days there was still no change and the pain was getting too much. I was also only sleeping 2 hours a night, the pain kept waking me up, almost stuck to my pillow from the saliva I had obviously avoided swallowing throughout.

I was then given new antibiotics Clarithromycin which I'm told is stronger but although searching the internet can't find any other information on it. This is to be taken 2x a day. To halt the pain I've also got 'Co-drydamol' pills which seem a lot effective as it allowed me to actually sleep well all night. =D
Though I woke up with the most immense pain. =(

It'll be 24 hours tonight so I'm hoping improvements are made ... I have 4 more tablets so I'm guessing these are strong enough to kill the infection in the next 2 days.

Re: Swallowing too painfull - Have bacterial tonsilitis

Hi, i have exactly the same thing and am 1* years of age. It is really painful and feels like when you swallow, theres a massive lump in your throat and it is painful, especially at night. Anyway i have a doctors appointment on wednesday, but i really dont want to wait that long. Anything effective i can purchase over the counter to get rid of the pain?

Cheers,

Dan
