Newly diagnosied with asthma

I was just tested and through the whole 9 yards with allergy/lung test. The reason for my visit to the doctor's was because I get a horrible attack when I go back to Iowa for Christmas to visit my husband's family (I currently live in southern California). We stay at my husband's dad's place where there is a cat. The doctor said that that I am allergic to cat's per the allergy "p-r-i-c-k" test results, nothing else really came up (oak tree & sweet gum flared-up a little). I have had a cat for 11 years, my parent's have a cat, my past roommates have had cats, and I have NEVER had a reaction ANYTHING close to what I get when I go to my in-laws back to Iowa.

I really have a hard time believing that I have asthma because of his dad's cat. I run, play sports and don't really run out of breath (I get runner's cramp before I run out of breath). Also, the ONLY time that I have a reaction is when I go back for Christmas and I would say that my symptoms are asthmatic. I just do not understand why this cat is the ONLY one that I react to so violently that I have an asthma attack, again I have NEVER had an attack from a cat before in my life. Is it possible that I am allergic to something other than my in-law's cat, something very rare inside their house that the doctor missed? I just don't want to take Advair & Xopenex, I don't like taking medications. Please help me, I don't know much at all about asthma.

Re: Newly diagnosied with asthma

My allergy tests showed dogs and cats. I have had dogs all my life and the only dog I have ever had an allergic reaction to was my neighbor's golden retriever. This was 23 years ago and the dog had been outside in the mud and smelled horrible. Anyway, having been through the allergy testing twice in 8 years, I have come to the conclusion that you can't really depend on them entirely. I know for sure that I am allergic to certain trees in bloom because I have symptoms then. My tests show allegies and asthma and currently I am on Advair once a day. Yes, you could be allergic to something else. The next time you go to your in-law's house, try using a nasal spray about a week before you go. You can use Nasalcrom OTC. It is natural and no side affects. That will prepare your nasal passages for anything that bothers you and also try to be aware of anything in his house that is new to you - plants, scented candles, etc.

Re: Newly diagnosied with asthma

their house may be full of more dander than others. do they have an air cleaner you can use? i have had asthma for yrs. & yrs; occassionally an animal makes mine flare up & i just think it is the dander plus the house could need to be shampooed & use a good air purifier.
good luck to you.

Re: Newly diagnosied with asthma

We often develop allergies later in adulthood. I grew up around cats. I am now deadly allergic to them. I too had some type of reaction back in 1984 when I had visited my brother who had a cat and did not know what was happening when my breathing went haywire. Out of his house I was fine. Then a few years later I was babysitting two kittens and guess what, I could not breathe at all. Found out that I had developed asthma (which by the way my brother does too) and cats became my deadly enemy.

My point is, do not take it lightly that you are may now be allergic to cat dander. You have allergic asthma that does not affect you being atheltic. Cat dander sent me to the emergency room almost blue and not breathing at all.

There are many triggers to asthma, and each person's asthma reacts differently to them. Triggers that can bring on asthma are: allergens, irritants such as tobacco smoke or strong odors, changes in weather, viral or sinus infections, exercise, medications, food, emotional anxiety and reflux disease.

If you have doubts that you have asthma, get retested by another doctor to be sure. If you truly have asthma, take you medications faithfully to prevent attacks.

Take care.

Re: Newly diagnosied with asthma

The advice of the others is very good! allergy/asthma. by all means retest by different doctor. I have had all this for 58 years. you could have changed or just this is a unique instance that must be controlled somehow? A second tes might be wise.
