Cool

My 9 year old likely has AS; I thought it was ADD, but ADD spans so many behaviors and he fits better w/AS. He keeps getting in trouble for things related to AS (Catholic school). The school wants him diagnosed before they'll provide any support services and he really mostly needs some understanding of the problems by the teachers. Most any of them can be solved I think with a bit of persistence and the provision of logical reasoning to him. He does seem happily content to be off by himself on the playground, and they seem to want him to be like other children. Anyway, I can't have him officially diagnosed with AS because if he is, he will lose all behavioral health benefits and we may need them!

In researching ADD, I found a number of supplements that have worked wonders for my child; there is so much crossover in the symptoms of mild autism/ADD. 95% of ADD children are Magnesium deficient. I give that along with Calcium because they're best given together. I give him Essential fatty acids in the form of borage oil, primrose oil and fish oil (a Max DHA formula). Seems these children cannot process some nutrients like normal children and end up with biochemically unbalanced brains. I also give my child 5-HTP which enabled him to handle everyday frustrations without having a melt down or being overly aggressive. A really lowdose 5-htp (10mg) may be found at painstresscenter.com. It acts as a natural prozac and there are studies that indicate 5HTP works as well as other SSRIs, but without the side effects. He also gets a good multi. I have read about vitamin A and folic acid, and may incorporate these as well. Supplementing my boy made him a new person. If he doesn't take them, or if I mess them up, he usually gets in more trouble at school. I ran out of magnesium for five days, and he was in the principals office 2-3 times that week.

I just started studying AS, and will post more if I find out about biochemical alternatives. I don't plan to pursue pharmacological solutions.

Lank,
You are a beautiful person and I am sitting here hoping that my 4 yr old autistic son and my 6 yr old "typical" son could both grow up to be half as literate and elequent as you!!!!!! Thank you for your perspective.

Also I am wondering is the urocarb a perscription and is is the same as urocholene that is a perscription. I have noticed a marked improvement in the my sons clarity of life with just the cod liver and I know that these two go hand in hand.
Thanks again and god bless

gmansmom,

your guess is correct that urocarb and urocholine are one and the same. urocarb is the name of the tablet, and urocholine is its active content.

for the moment, i'm trying once again going without it. i had changed how i took it (first thing in the morning, leaving the required half hour before breakfast - previously i took it just before going to bed), and noticed that i had no intuition or ability to see how to solve problems in mathematics. whether this was related to the fact that i had changed how i took my urocarb or that i had just spent three months forgetting everything after a bad semester at university i do not know, but since stopping taking it my mathematical abilities have increased (again, by stopping taking urocarbs or simply getting into the swing of things again, i don't know), and i haven't been aware of any significant falloff in any other abilities. so for the moment, i'm staying off it, but later in the year i will do a test on myself again to see what happens and whether or not it's worth it for me personally to be taking it.

of course, be sure to remember that your autistic son isn't the same as me, and could well acquire great benefits from urocarb whereas i do not. all you can do is test it.
