Accutane/birth control

Hi Everyone

I am starting Accutane next week. I also need to be put on BC. Problem is, I have no clue which one to use? I have never been on it.

Is there a certain one that I should be put on that people go on when on Accutane or does it not matter? Is it just preference?

PLEASE help! Thanks!! Any input is appreciated!!!!!

Re: Accutane/birth control

hey! its really a personal choice, and probably is best to have your derm determine what he/she thinks would be best for you, i am on accutane and bc and have been using ortho tri cyclen and i love it. it ( for me ) didnt improve my skin until about month three, so dont give up just stick with it. good luck!

Re: Accutane/birth control

Congratulations and I hope Accutane is the answer to your acne.

I have heard of Diane-35, Desogen, Mircette, and Yasmin as good birth control pills that help with acne. If I were you, I'd conduct a search on the birth control board.

Good Luck!

Re: Accutane/birth control

Not knowing your history - have you been on anything before Accutane? I've been on Accutane several times in my 'younger' years. It worked great, and then my acne came back. I got a new derm and he does not like Accutane because he said in his patients when he uses it, 80% of his patients come back a couple years later having acne again. It also is a very harsh drug (bad for your liver). My current derm said he uses it as a last resort (as did my previous derm claimed).

My history in this: I'm 26 years old - been seeing a derm since I was 14 or 15. I have been on Accutane 4 times (by the first derm I went to). I went on it at 16 for 2 'sessions' and then again when I was 20 for another 2 'sessions'.

The one good thing my current derm said with Accutane is after you've been on it the meds that were not affective will often become affective as treatment again.

Accutane is a great drug for clearing up acne, but mine came back as did many of my friends who also went on accutane. I'm also not a big fan of the side effects.
