Question NOSE - Nostrils have cuts, both sides, not healing and sore, petroleum no help.

Male, early 20's, fairly fit, no known health issues.

Started some months ago, I believe I had some light acne on inside of both of my nostrils, getting sore I relieved the pressure (pressed with retractable hoked nail file part of nail clippers) and it seems neither have fully healed since. Each morning when its scabbed over it easily breaks out whilst blowing my nose, naturally I stopped blowing my nose in the mornings, however lightly I was before, to help stop this but the scab keeps gathering in size over a few days and becomes quite irriting and restricts breathing or otherwise is eventually loosened in the shower or simply sneezing.

For some weeks now I have been applying Vaseline or equivalent, lightly with thin layer via q-tip right out the shower morning and night to the cut area with no change.

Recently I have noticed that my nose has begun to have an odor I can pick up by laying an index finger just under the nostril should my nostril be a little runny. I stopped with the petroleum jelly to see if it may have been causing the odor but alas it remains.

Not sure what to do at this point, keep trying to let it build up and scramble to keep from sneezing, return to the petroleum, or see someone (which I would like to avoid to do inherent costs). The cut area, at least on one side, remains a bit sore and my nose never really 'feels clear' throughout the day, becomming rather annoying.

I should note that I clear my nose out the shower in the morning lightly and outside the cut areas with a few q-tips and avoid blowing it as much as I can.

Ask your pharmacist or doctor about this before you do it, but over the counter Bacitracin ointment is a great way to get rid of and/or prevent infection in your nose/nostrils. I was told when I had the problem that you have with bloody nose blowing (just from a sinus infection) that you can easily get an infection in there and those are symptoms of it.

Some people have the response of irritation to Vaseline (luckily I am okay with that and use it regularly). You may want to switch to K-Y jelly if you have not already tried that as it is water based and your nose may need the moisture.

Blowing gently and not often is good. Also having enough humidity in your home (I believe 45% is a good amount) by running a humidifier helps as well.

If your pharmacist or doctor says okay on the Bacitracin (most likely will recommend twice a day for two weeks) and it does not work for you, you may need to get a prescription as the infection might be stubborn.

Best of luck!

if it's an open wound I wouldn't use the KY.. you want to either use the Bactrim or an antibacterial ointment such as Neosporin would be the best.. it would help prevent it from getting infected and will help moisturize the skin.

Well, I started using Savlon, its an English antiseptic skin healing cream, similiar to Neosporin. Haven't noticed much of a difference, I'll stick with it a little longer and ask my grocer's pharmacist about Bacitracin in the meantime.
/Thanks for the replies thus far.

peace,
