BCP for peri menopausal symptoms???

Hi all....brand new to this board and would like to pose the question. Has anyone tried taking low dose BC to manage peri menopausal symptoms? I've been reading some posts and can relate to almost all of them. Am 47 and have been trying to deal with this by natural means (flax seed, EPO, vita B etc.), and have had good luck until recently. Any words of advice would be greatly appreciated.

Re: BCP for peri menopausal symptoms???

I have two friends that are each using the mini-pill to control their symptoms. It's working great for both of them.

Unfortunately, due to blood clotting issues, it's not an option for me.

Re: BCP for peri menopausal symptoms???

Hi,
I have a perscription for BCP sitting in my drawer. I am debating about starting them. My GYN gave me the Rx to help control heavy periods. I sure would like to have lighter and shorter periods, but I don't know if I'm willing to take the increase in other problems the pill can bring. Do you gain or lose weight on the pill? I have heard both. I don't have any clotting problems or family history of breast cancer, but I'm still alittle scared. Wish there was a clear-cut answer. Guess we have to decide what's best for us. Let me know what you decide to do. I took the pill 25 years ago and did fine, maybe at 51 I would still do ok. Ann

Re: BCP for peri menopausal symptoms???

Ann, You and I sound like we're in the same boat. I have them in my drawer too and am reluctant to start them (except when I am bleeding like crazy, not sleeping, moody etc...) I think part of the problem is that they are not necessary for birth control. Why type were you prescribed? I have Yasmine. Weight gain or loss? I guess I'll see when I go on them. We're going on vacation next month and my period is due the day we leave. Can't imagine being on a plane in that condition. So, this may be the month to try. I know I need help with the crazy fluctuation of hormones that I go through each month. The BC pill is supposed to regulate all that. Any one else have experience with this?

Re: BCP for peri menopausal symptoms???

I am on lo-ovral and have been for about 3 years (I am 43 and started having peri symptoms when I hit 40). I have had complete success using the pill. No anxiety, no hot flashes, etc. It evened out my hormones and I feel completely normal. If you have no risk factors, I would highly recommend it.
