Question Sleeping on and off, on and off...

Hi all.. I'm a lil worried, even though I take vitamins and such... and been cutting back on Zoloft 100mg to 50mg for two days my sleeping schedule has been horrible lately even before that. Example today I woke up at noon from only four hours of sleep, went to sleep at 4pm then woke up at 9pm, went back to bed at 11pm only to wake up at 2am, I've been having more tiredness as of late and less ambition to do things... any idea about this, all?

Re: Sleeping on and off, on and off...

sounds like a reaction to reduced medications, you need to gradually reduce your dosages such as from 100 mg to 75 mg. keep that for a few weeks while your body readjusts, and then repeat.

sounds like you have reduced it too fast. second some antidepressants make you sleep more, and of course one symptom of depression (which can have many causes) is sleeping alot and unrefreshed sleep.

I have known others who used antidepressants and the lift in mood was temporary, I read on theory for this was that the medications causes the adrenal glands to kick in via feedback with serotonin and other neurotransmittors which causes the lift in mood but then the adrenals get exhuasted and the depression is back.

something to consider anyway.

Re: Sleeping on and off, on and off...

just want to add that sleep is a big part of how you feel, and poor sleep can only make depression worse. speak with your physician and consider getting a rx for a temporary sleeping aide, such as ambien, trazodone, etc. then, get your sleep cycle back on track and stop sleeping in spurts, you are only making it worse. also, avoid alcohol, caffeine, tv, and all the usual stimulants before sleeping, etc...that's what I would do.
