Re: Diet for GERD

Now it differs from person to person, but my staples have been:

Potatoes and sweet potatoes
Rice
Cooked carrots, spinach, mushrooms,
Rice Milk (instead of regular milk)
bananas
apples
chicken or fish
bread
avocados
Soups (not spicy or with onions)
Beans
Limited amount of cheese (to season, as too much dairy is problematic)
Pasta (pesto or alfredo sauce seem to work, NOT tomato sauce)

Hope this helps, Skylar

Avoid anything too acidic or too spicy (e.g. a vindaloo or glass of grapefruit juice). I find most of the dietry recommendations too restrictive for my taste so I still eat tomato pased sauces and dairy products for example.

I find that if I take my PPIs, I can eat a fairly normal diet and if I don't, it doesn't matter what I eat, I will still be in trouble. However, I find it pays to avoid very large meals (or very small ones) and skipping meals is also a bad idea. Avoid eating to soon before bed or bending over after a meal. Losing weight also helps. You are not supposed to drink alchol but if you do, do it in moderation (never drink enough to get intoxicated).

Everyone is different though, you will have to experiment to see what you can get away with (unless you just want to exist on the blandest diet possible).

Re: Diet for GERD

Things to avoid:
Onions, garlic, peppers, tomato products, spices, mustard, peppermint, chocolate, citrus, coffee, tea, soda, caffine, alcohol, advil, motrin, aleve. As your symptoms get under control you can gradually add back some of these items to see what your personal triggers are.

I would add applesauce and oatmeal to the previous posting of "safe" foods.
