dr shopping

What exactly is doctor shopping? Can you get arrested for it?
I was getting oxy / actiq and tramadol from one doctor for years. I was also getting a small rx for tramadol from my family physician. After a fracture, the orthopaedic wrote an rx for hydrocodone. Well anyways....the pharmacy got wind and called everyone. The family physician said he won't treat me anymore and the PM doc said they could only treat for 1 month.

Is this doctor shopping?.....all were for different 'conditions'.

Re: dr shopping

you should be only getin meds from one doc so you dont fall into the addict category.
if you go the same pharmacy and are getting opiates from three seperate physcians you are askin for trouble....depends what state and the laws...certain states keep track of scripts....its wise to only see one doc for your meds.....

Re: dr shopping

I did not go to the same pharmacy. I went to one and they tried to run it thru my ins co and the ins co said it was "too soon to fill" so the pharmacist took it upon herself to call the ins co and then to call the other pharmacy and then called the doctors. The PM doc got a call from the pharmacy and did a print out of my rx history (I don't know how he did it) and it show 2 rx's from another doctor. It did not show my family physician, so I know for a fact that the pharmacy called him.

Re: dr shopping

docs have huge malpractice premiums and are covering there butts in case stuff happens to their patients....thats why they prefer to have one doc write for controlled substances and the others treat you and write for uncontrolled.....ive got three docs also but only one would write back when for opiates.....chef
and they talk/communicate to each other and also communicate to the pharmecist...they know about folks who are habit prone....chef

Re: dr shopping

Even though you were getting these meds for different conditions technically "they" feel you should receive ALL narcotic prescriptions from ONE doctor. For example, the orthapedic and your primary should have both given their recommendations to your pain management doctor and then THAT doctor and ONLY that doctor would write your scripts. That is how it is set up for me with my PM doctor. I had to sign a form saying I would only recieve narcotic prescriptions from her. The ONLY exception is any narcotic med I might have injected in the ER or after being admitted to the hospital or something like that. And even then, she needs to be informed. This seems to be how more and more doctors are handling things.

I know that you feel you weren't dr shopping, but I used to do the same thing and somewhere and always told myself the same thing, this one is for my toothache, this is for my pain condition, tis is for a migraine, etc...etc.... and got them all filled (normally at differeent pharmacy's) and all that "explaining" to myself was my subconscious telling me that what I was doign was not right. I was lukcy and no one found out. Go to your PM doctor and try and work it out with them. Beg, cry, do whatever you have to. You don't want to lose access to meds you actually NEED for a medical condition, which I am assuming you have since you are not mentioning addiction, etc....
