Antibiotics and Gallstones
I dont mean to post so mahy threads today, but I have another question.
I tested positive for strep throat this morning and was prescribed the antibiotic Zithromax.
I have a gallstone, that was realized via ultrasound in January '06, and I plan on having surgery to remove my gallbladder later this year. I have been on the medication Bentyl for my gallbladder, whenever I have an "episode" I take the medication and it relieves the pain.
I read on the bottle of Zithromax that it shouldn't be taken with antacids. I know Bentyl isn't exactly an antacid, but I know its used for stomach-related issues as are antacids. I haven't taken the Bentyl in over 2-3 weeks, as I only take it when my gallbladder causes pain, so I'm sure there is none of that medication in my system at this time. I took the antibiotic about 2 hours ago, and now I'm feeling sharp pains right below my rib cage, often where I experience the pain from the gallbladder "episodes". It isn't severe and it isn't a constant pain, but I started to get worried about taking the antibiotics along with the Bentyl. Does anyone know if the 2 drugs mixed together would harm me? I tried looking online prior to posting this thread, but that search was unsuccessful.

There's no documented interactions between the 2 drugs. Bentyl isn't an antacid, as you stated, and isn't really related to the antacids. While antacids neutralize acid in the stomach, Bentyl works in the gastrointestinal tract to relieve muscle spasms.
But, as stated above, it's always best to check with your pharmacist.

Re: Antibiotics and Gallstones
Hi,
This is so odd, My daughter who is 17 had strep about two weeks ago, she was put on the same medication, she complained about upper stomach pain, once she finished the meds, the pain was gone. She took it with food like the pharmacist had told her but it still caused problem's, Now with your gallstones I can honestly understand why your having problems, I would call your Doctor, you don't want another problem flaring up.
