Waking up gasping for air

Ever since sinus problems began few months ago, been waking up with more frequency gasping for air and short of breath. Chest feels tight, like hard to breathe. Throat feels constricted. Can rhinocort and clarinex cause this.
Would it help if I asked my doc for an inhaler or is there something other people use to decrease the frequency of this problem.

Re: Waking up gasping for air

Sounds like you probably have asthma. Sinus problems can cause asthma to get worse, so it's possible you have a very mild case of asthma normally, but the sinus problems are causing them to worsen and so you're now noticing the symptoms. Your symptoms are very typical of asthma, so I would take yourself to the Dr for it. If it is asthma, he'll probably give you an inhaler, but I would also suggest something like Singulair. It will help with your allergies but will also stop the asthma attacks so you probably won't even need to use an inhaler.

I think I told you about sino-bronchial syndrome? But if you are actually waking up at night gasping for air, you need to get evaluated for asthma.

Thank you all for replies.

I was reading some posts on this board, something about sleep apnea, where you can wake up or partial wake from sleep because stop breathing for moments. I see doc today, he didn't prescribe inhaler even though I asked for one. I stagger around on 2 to 3 hours sleep a day, don't know how long I can tolerate this. My work is suffering. But this is old old news for most of you. I really don't know how people with allergies or sinus problems for years cope. Maybe the allergist can tell me if I have mild version of asthma.

I wonder why he didn't evaluate you for asthma? It can be dangerous if left untreated.
