Diabetes: The Truth about losing weight.

Guys how are we doing? For the longest I have had this mentality of fight, fight, fight off diabetes. I was diagnosed with it when I was 18 and I'm now 24 (Type 2). I have always been active working out, diet pretty decent, but always overweight. As of late I have been doing what you call "two a days". I workout twice a day. I run in the morning on an empty stomach(water only), then I work out in the evening weights. But, I notice I'm still gaining weight.....5'9 now 270. So discouraging! My sugar is usually ok but I don't check it often. I know its under control because if it wasn't, I would be constantly urinating all the time and hungry because of the urination(i.e clearing out all the vitamins and nutrients because of the frequent trips to the restroom).

My question is, how does one truly lose weight while having diabetes? Could it be the meds I'm on that's causing me to gain weight(amaryl, benicar, crestor, avandamet - yep on all 4)? What are some of the extreme majors I can take because eating right, cutting back on junk foods, isn't working for me. Have any of you guys honestly and truly tried the low carb diet? All I hear is negative things about it but I'm desperate at this point and will try it now..

Yes, it worked for me. I went on a low carb diet using Dr Berstein's book as a reference and lost 30 pounds. I went from 145 to 115 and have not gained any of it back. I am a 5ft 6in. My A1c dropped from 6.4 to 5.5.

At this point, about 7 months later.....total weight loss of 50lbs, blood pressure stable at 122/78 with no meds.....sugar <100 every morning......
GTF and cinnamon daily is the pills I'm down to....

Re: Diabetes: The Truth about losing weight.

I'll look into this Dr. B and see whats going on with him. So are you doing like 100 carbs a day wth a mixture of complex carbs, veggies and fruits? Congrats on your success of getting your sugar down..

I honestly don't know if what he's talking about will apply to me, but I'm willing to try anything. A truly lowered carb'd diet may be the thing...I was thinking of doing the atkins where it was strickly like 20 carbs a day and thats harsh.

Yes, people can lose weight with diabetes.

NO, it's not okay to not check your blood sugar. You can't always tell when your blood sugar is high based on feeling. That's why some people have diabetes for years before they are diagnosed.
