Help - Can Toprol stop working?

Last wk my b/p shot up, as well as I was having anxiety attacks. My dr increased me from 50mg toprol xl to 100mg 2x/day as well as adding a direutic. It's been a wk & my b/p hasn't lowered. This morning it was 157/97 pulse 66. It's my understanding that if you are already on toprol & increase the dose it should work w/in a couple days.
My thought is maybe the toprol isn't working anymore. Has anyone been on toprol for years then all of a sudden it stops working???

Re: Help - Can Toprol stop working?

I take 50 mg of Toprol and 300/25 of Avalide. All the Toprol does for me is keep my pulse at 60 and the Avalide keeps my blood pressure around 137/85.

Re: Help - Can Toprol stop working?

Talk about deja vu! Exact same thing happened to me.

I was on Toprol 50mg 1xday for a year and bp was 145/90 (bp not well controlled). Then about a month ago my pulse and bp shot up and I started having anxiety attacks. Doc put me on 100mg 2xday. Still not great and the side effects were just too much (numbness). Doc then added a diuretic for 3 days (had a reaction).

I was still having odd pulse rate anxiety attack bp issues so we are now tapering off Toprol and going to Altace.

So..I have no idea if the Toprol suddenly stopped working, but something was up.

Re: Help - Can Toprol stop working?

I have been on high blood pressure for 7 years and have tried about 10-12 blood pressure meds, most in the last 5 months. On New Years Eve I ended up in the hosipital after I passed out a the Drs office. They found I had low potassium caused by diruetics. Since I have been out I have been thru a lot meds and have had a slew of tests to see why my blood pressure is high. Since I have beem on Avalide and Toprol it seems to be manageable. To answer your question yes meds will stop working or cause an adverse reaction when something changes in the body. Very few people on high blood pressure or cholerestrol meds will stay on the same meds.
