Questions about Endoscopies

I have a few questions about the endoscopy procedure. Has anyone ever requested that they get one even if their doctor didn't suggest it, just to put their mind at ease? I want to request one, irregardless of what the doctor says but I don't know if he will approve it. Also is it done at the doctor's office or with a specialist or hospital? And do you have to be put under, because I would prefer not to be?

Sorry for all the questions, but I figured this would be the best place to get my answers. Thanks everyone!

Re: Questions about Endoscopies

As far as your doctor.. is this your PCP or a GI specialist? Any GI specialists who thinks you MAY need one will probably go ahead.. my insurance doesn't require referrals for specialists.. so I just went straight to a GI... I had an EGD endoscopy.. and I did it without sedation... the sedation though is usually demerol... so you aren't completely out.. but not really there either... as far as going without sedation.. it's not too bad if you can just concentrate on breathing and drooling... it's a tad uncomfortable.. but not painful... the most uncomfortable thing was when they blow air into your stomach to inflate it... you then belch the air out in a gag... I have a horrible gag reflex and did just fine.. all the nurses and my doctor were quite amazed I did it without sedation...

Re: Questions about Endoscopies

I sort of pushed for an EGD/endoscopy, but not outright ask for it. That was my 1st time, in fact; never seen this GE before the other month (nor ANY GE). He signed me up for lots of tests, even though I was new to this whole thing. (But then, my insurance is Blue Cross, and there's never any worry about whether things can be done or not.) He knew, though we'd never met before, that I was very upset about this sudden occurrence and wanted answers more than guesswork (which we're still actually doing).

I would definitely go for the full anesthesia. If I had known that's what I would get (a co-worker told me his latest was full, but most stories I'd heard were "lightly sedated" including official literature), I wouldn't have been in such an anxious mess before the EGD. I hate vomiting, and hate messing around that gag reflex. Too many people have written that they had some difficulty (not alot) getting past it. I was so worried about the procedure itself! Then it turned out they just knocked me out! OK, that's cool!

Re: Questions about Endoscopies

I know I also have a horrible gag reflex. I can't even use those things that clean your tongue. I am also worried about the procedure itself, it sounds gross. I have one friend who said they just sprayed her throat and another who said she was knocked out. I want to push for the test to get some answers but I am scared to death of it. It sounds horrible. I hate being knocked out though. I hate that you have to sign papers that acknowledge the fact that you could die. I am hoping for a conscious sedation kind of thing.

Tomorrow I am going to my regular doctor, I haven't gone to a specialist yet. I am going to see what my doctor says about my new symptoms and then go from there. My insurance doesn't require referrals so I don't need his okay to go to a GI. I just don't want to demand a procedure that I don't really need, especially when it sounds so uncomfortable. But I don't want to have something more serious wrong with me and not be diagnosed properly. I hate being sick!

Thanks for your replies guys

Re: Questions about Endoscopies

I'm telling you.. I gag when brushing my teeth... and I did it without sedation.. it's not bad.. no pain, just mild discomfort, as far as the gag reflex, they just tell you to swallow and in it goes...that's the hardest part... if you do go with sedation.. there is an anethesist during the procedure that all he/she does is monitor you...
