Question Sotalol and short of breath

Hi Everyone,

I have finally come off amiodarone and feel much better for not being on it and 3 weeks ago I had an ICD put in to control the ventricular tachycardia and went back on the sotalol to control the atrial flutter/fibrillation.
Apparently the ICD controls the VT and the atrial flutter but not the fibrillation which is what the sotalol is for.
When I was just on sotalol (before I went on amiodarone) I used to find that when I exercised my heart had arrhythmias and later on I would find it difficult to breathe at night, I put this down to my heart slowing down and the sotalol making my heart slow (which is what it does) which is what was making it hard to breathe.
Now I have the ICD I find that it stops the arrhythmias in their tracks which is great but at night I still have trouble breathing especially if I have done quite alot of exercise.
My question is does anybody think that, that could be the cause of my trouble breathing, I haven't had the ICD checked yet to make sure it is doing what it should be doing but I will mention it when I go in a few weeks. I assume that the pacemaker bit would kick in if it went too slow but maybe it isn't set up to do that yet.
I went to the hospital to see my consultant this week and he said my chest sounded alot clearer and that I looked better, I did tell him that I was having a bit of trouble breathing at night but he didn't know alot about ICD's and said to ask the electrophyiologist when I next go.

Any idea's or advice would be great,

Many thanks,
Lindsay

Re: Sotalol and short of breath

Lindsay,

A pronounced symptom of heart failure is difficulty breathing when lying down. Do you know your ejection fraction?
Maybe the sotalol, by weakening the force of the heartbeat and it's rate is duplicating this effect.

Do you cough a lot?
