Toddler And Asthma

I am a mother of a 2 1/2 year old that is looking for answers. My son has severe asthma and is sick every 4-6 weeks. He is currently on flovent and xopenex when needed. Other than trying to deal with this illness he is a very aggressive child. He has been in daycare for a month and a half and has already been picked up three times for biting. I am just trying to find another person that could be going through the same thing. I currently feel like i am going to lose my mind if i don't get answers soon. Has anyone else had to deal with aggression and asthma medicine? Any suggestions would greatly be appreciated....

I doubt seriously that the asthma meds are causing any agression. The inhaled steroid dissipates into the airways and does not get into the body like oral and injectable steroids. These are different. So do not fear that the meds are causing this issue.

Re: Toddler And Asthma

It's probably just the age. My son has CF and is on albuterol, etc. He just turned 3 and this past winter he bit his classmates. Twice he bit three children in less than two hours. I looked up biting and read about how biting can happen for several different reasons -- frustration (toddlers are easily frustrated & upset), curiousity -- another reason could be because the caregivers aren't paying attention. Usually a child will give a sign that they're going to bite. My son announced during show and tell he was going to bite -- few minutes later he walked up to a child, pulled up his sleeve and bit him on the arm. Later in the day, he was sitting on a potty chair, bounced the chair across the room and bit another child. Both of those incidents could've been avoided if the teacher had been paying closer attention. I'm probably jinxing myself, 'cuz every time I remark that DS hasn't bitten anyone lately, he does so, but the biting incidents happened off and one for a couple of weeks and then stopped, pretty much hasn't bitten for almost two months. Good luck.

Re: Toddler And Asthma

hello,
My 2 year old also has asthma and he takes 2 puffs of Quvar every night along with Singular. When he gets sick he takes albuterol. Having a child with asthma can be worrysome at times. When my son took oral steriods he was so very hyper. He is very calm now.
