Re: Allergic to PPI's

noptical- I wouldn't say they are "fixed" but I got them under control through medications and avoidance of certain items. Originally, I had immunotherapy for some allergies. (Although I ended them about 5 years ago and am getting ready to start them up again.) I also removed some allergins such as my pet--which was hard to do. Over the years, I have tried various medications for all conditions to get rid of the cough. Currently, my meds include: Allegra, Singulair, Flonase, Astelin, Advair 500/50, Prevacid 2x/day, Albuterol as needed, and a couple eye drops for allergy eyes and dry eye. I also stick to the acid reflux friendly diet.

Someday, I would love to find a way to get off all the medications. In addition to being a lot for my body, they get extremely expensive each month.

Re: Allergic to PPI's

Uh... for one, I'd seek another opinion with another gastro.. sounds like this guy is wanting to run alot of tests off the bat... sad to say, but probably to get paid.. secondly, what surgery did he suggest??? I can't think of any gastro one besides removal of the esophagus that would be that detrimental to you to worry about complications... if all this is true about what your gastro said, give him the boot quickly

Re: Allergic to PPI's

There's tons of PPIs:

Nexium
Prevacid
Prilosec
Aciphex
Protonix

If you are allergic to one, you should be tried on another.

I would get another GI doctor. I have seen 3 GI doctors, all of which don't recommend the surgery to anyone as it is risky and has an very low success rate. One of my doctors used to do it and he said he has never seen one person not back on PPIs within a year.

Re: Allergic to PPI's

Moesciphish, The Gastro was taking about the Nissan Fundo. And he's the one who said 1 in 1000 will die from it. Acccck! I'm not trying to scare anyone else but that's what he told me.

blondy2061h - He tried to tell me that if you were allergic to 1 ppi you would be to all. I'm going to the allergist to see what he has to say.

MountainReader - thanks for your detailed and informative reply - Congratulations 2 months without a cough. That's awesome. I'd like to go 2 hours!

Re: Allergic to PPI's

I agree with not getting the surgery unless it's a last resort. I would go through with the tests though because it's possible they might find that something else is causing it and maybe the PPIs aren't even the right direction! I also agree with looking at other PPIs.. have you taken the OTC Prilosec? You might be successfull with that even if you have to take 2 a day to compensate for it not being as strong as prescription versions.
