Crazy Reaction

Hello, I am new to the board, but was diagnosed with Type 2 in October 1999....yes, almost 7 years now. I currently take a boatload of pills, no insulin yet. My last A1C was 6.9, and my fasting glucose was 187....not great.

I'm on Glucovance 2 per day, 4 mg Avandia 2 per day for the diabetes. I also take Lotrel for BP, just started taking half a pill of Lipitor (5 mg) about 2 months ago.

Last night I went off the charts at Carrabbas. My wife and I took her Mom and Dad out for their anniversary dinner. Bread, Pasta, and split a dessert with my wife. I have found that when I get bad like this, my BS doesn't usually get higher than about 220, and I don't do it often.

Last night, it went to 260.

I had intense aches and pains all over my body, and went through a period of teeth chattering chills at bed time. I tried to force water down, though I wasn't really thirsty. Woke up once after an hour and a half, still aching. Tried to use the bathroom, but not much happened. I was able to fall back asleep, and woke up this morning with about the fullest bladder I've ever had. My BS was 167.

I'm freaked out. My DR. originally gave me a 10 year "lifespan" to be on pills before she figured I'd have to go on insulin. Looks like that time may be approaching quicker than that.

When I was first diagnosed, I was much more careful about what I ate. In fact, part of the reason was that I had lost about 60 pounds for no apparent reason, and wanted to keep it off, but it has slowly returned at a steady pace of about 10 pounds per year, no matter what I eat or my activity level. I am 6'1" about 345. I was 295 at my lowest when I was diagnosed.

Just depressed and wanted somewhere to vent my story this morning.

Hi there! I am newly diagnosed. Just over a month and a half ago. Still at the beginning faze of being "scared straight"!! Although I have definitely slipped. Still waiting to see a dietician to find out for sure what I can eat. I have heard some people say that after a while they forget they are even diabetic. I wonder if the problem lays there. You don't feel diabetic, so it is easier to slip up more often. Only now have you felt the effect of what a massive carb overload can do. I know people who have been on insulin for 20 years with no complications so far. I know it is scary and will be a major lifestyle change,even in comparison to originally being diagnosed 7 years ago. But after a while it too, will become normal. Maybe you need to get back on the right path again, and talk to your dr. about what you experienced. I know how you feel about being depressed. I wake up every morning at 5.30, just feeling overwhelmed with everything I am dealing with. (lots going on outside of my health issues) and I wonder how I will ever be here for my kids. I am 40 now, and hope to be here for at least another 30 years, but some days the depression makes me wonder if I will be here next year. Also I always tend to look at the worst case scenario, so that doesn' t help. Just know you are not alone.

I have been reading up a bit on the type of symptoms I had, and though my blood sugar was really high, the body aches and pain, as well as the chills, seem to point to a reaction to the Lipitor. The pain continues yesterday though my BS was "normal" for me (@165). I did not take the Lipitor last night, and feel slightly better this morning. I was only on it as a cautionary, as my Cholesterol is 190. I do have low levels of the "Good" cholesterol, so my Doc was trying to build that number up.

After reading up on Statins, and their associated possible side effects, I am going to discontinue their use. I have a VERY VERY Physically Demanding job, and I can't afford to deal with pain thats not directly associated with my work....which I'm sure this was not.
