Re: Palpitations that scare me!

Hi. I'm new to this board. I was looking for some information for my MIL who suffers from CHF when I came upon this post.

I, too have heart palpitations although not as often as I used to. I went thru most of the tests you all have had. Turned out my heart palpitations weren't duo to a heart problem. My doctor ordered a blood test to check my TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone). It was WAY too high which means I have hypothyroidism. I went home from the doctor's and researched hypothyroidism and found out that heart palpitations are a common symptom for this. What a relief to find out there was nothing wrong with my heart and all I had to do was take one pill a day to take care of it.

If tests show you have no problems with your heart, ask your doctor to do a blood test for thyroid disease. It's a simple and relatively inexpensive test that often is overlooked.

To all of you who are searching for an explanation for your heart palps, I know how frightening they can be. I hope you find the answer as to why you're having them very soon. Good luck!

Barb

Re: Palpitations that scare me!

I have had palps or SVTs since I was 20. I am now 35 and they just re-appeared after many years of taking verapamil. When I was 20 I was physically active and in college but ended up in the ER with a heart rate of over 200 bpm. The more I talk to people the more it seems that this wierd thing is not uncommon. Some people have them and don't do anything about them. I just had one six months ago for the first time in five years. Now I am on Cartia 180mg in the AM and atenenol 20mg at night. Still having episodes once a month on the new meds, but doc says they will subside. Gosh, I hope so. I can't afford ER visits even with insurance!
There is some surgery that they can try where they actually "burn" the nodes where the impuses from. I have heard more cases of this not working that actually working.
I hate hosptials!

Re: Palpitations that scare me!

Thank you for your post Seaecho! It really is comforting to know somebody understands! I had a Cardiologist Appt. last week and he did EKG and an EchoCardiogram which he showed me that my valves were fine apart from a mild Tricuspid and Mitral valve regurgitation,he only showed concern when i told him that a PVC that i'd had 3 days before the visit, had lasted longer than usual and that i felt that i was about to pass out, he has mentioned that i should consider trying "CardioNet Monitoring".Have you tried that yet? I suppose its worth a try! ill try anything at this stage to get to the bottom of this debilitating problem! Keep me posted!
