The active ingredients in generic drugs must be IDENTICAL to their brand counterparts. However, in some women, the INACTIVE ingredients, which are not required to be identical, can cause some small problems in women when switching.
Anyway, I don't think that you have anything to worry about at this point, nor do I think that spotting for a few days indicates that you must use the brand only. The spotting could just be a coincidence. Unless it keeps happening in subsequent months, just consider this a one-time thing. Sometimes spotting just happens, even when there is no switch from brand to generic. The generic birth control should not affect your cycle at all, and if it is, the side effects will likely be short lived, and you'll be back to normal in no time.
