Birth Control Question?

Ok, well I'm 30 years old and have always suffered from mild/moderate acne. At some points in my life...my acne isn't so bad, but at other times, it's worse. Right now is one of those times and I'm just tired of it.
I've been seriously considering going back on BCP's. I've been off of them for about 6 years now. I used to take TriLevelen and Triphasal I think and I remember my skin wasn't so great then. With both preganancies and for about 6 months after each, I had perfectly clear skin. Then, when the periods started, so did my acne.
So...now the decision is of course what pill. And I know everyone is different, so I'm just looking for one that seems to help the most women. I've heard good things about Yasmin and Mercette. I'm so scared of having the initial breakouts that so many things cause- but I guess if I want to finally get clear, I need to suffer a little bit (just not too much I hope). I was thinking of going on Spiro, but meds like that scare me a little.
Any thoughts on Spiro...how are the folks doing that are on it?
Anyway, any help y'all can provide would be great.

Re: Birth Control Question?

Well I was on Alesse before I ever got acne for about 2 years and my skin was perfect. Then I stopped it for about 2-3 months cause it caused terrible weight gain for me. I lost the weight but got acne! So then at age 20 I started taking Yasmin and Doxycycline. I was clear for about 2 years and now I am getting off doxy. so far I haven't been breaking out too bad and it has been a month. I like Yasmin though because I didn't gain any weight with it. I want to ask my derm. for Spiro but I am afraid he is gonna turn me down. I am 22 now by the way.

Re: Birth Control Question?

I used to be on Ortho Cyclen, and it worked great. When I went off it, I gradually began to break out more and more as each month went by. Now I am on Ortho Tri Cyclen (b/c the tri-cyclen is available in generic, wheras cyclen is not) and my skin has begun clearing up again, gradually.

Re: Birth Control Question?

hey i am trying bcps for acne for the first time...........
wondering if anyone can help me. i tried estrostep for four months, did nothing for skin. now i am on month one of ortho try cyclen lo. was wondering when if at all i should expect to see improvements and when to give up. my skin is still reallly oily and am still getting zits. I was also hoping someone could explain the diffrenece between ortho, and things like alesse and yasmin, and if this bcp works better in conjunction with antiboitics or any kind of supplements. i have a history of breast cancer in my family as well so i need to stear clear of things that will increase estrogen in me.

Re: Birth Control Question?

I just switched from ortho tri-cyclen lo to yasmin to try to clear up my acne. Everyone tells me it's not that bad, but it's bad enough to make me not want to go outside some days. The ortho lo didn't do much for it, maybe cleared it up a little bit, but i was getting cysts around my jawline pretty much nonstop. sometimes it would be a little better, but never clear. So i have only been on the yasmin for 4 days and haven't seen much of a change. My skin is actually pretty clear right now, but i can't say it's the yasmin, just a good time of month. anyway i have heard that the initial breakout is usually in the 3rd week of the first month and that will be my first week back in school, so bad timing. But i will keep everyone posted and let you all know how it is working for me.
