cat scan and metformin

I have to have a lung scan,I was told to stop taking my 1000 twice a day metformin 3 days before and 2 days after.
Now my sugars have been very high, which is why my met was doubled,I'm also on 10 mg glipazide.
I'm concerned of course that my sugars will go very high, but I'm also concerned because when I first got on it ,I felt awful terrible side affects, eventually my body got used to it.Now I have to go off and get back on it,am I going to get those awful side effects again? They really made me feel sick.
Also he gave me a starter kit for Byetta,I 'm afraid to try it ,fear of side effects.
The reason my sugar is so high is because my love of sugar and carbs, actually i'ts an addiction.
Also my only son was killed in a fire truck accident 8 months ago,and food brings me some comfort,I know if I lost some weight,my sugars would be better.I'm on my way to insulin if this keeps up.I am so tired of all the pills but iI really don't want to be on insulin
This past year has been awful,we lost our home in Hurricane Katrina, then we lost our son,a young fire captain who was a hero of storm, made it through, and then to die in a wreck going to a fire.
Sorry to go into all of this, but just to let you know the stress I've been under.
My A1C has gone fom 7 to 9.7,in 3 months.

Hi xcreedox,

I have T1 so I don't have many ideas to help you with your situation, but wanted to say how sorry I am to hear about all you've been through. I'll keep you and your family in my prayers.

Re: cat scan and metformin

I'm sorry to hear of all your problems. Katrina did a lot of damage but don't let it do further damage by not doing the things you know you should. I'm truly sorry for the loss of your son.

I can tell you what I have found in relation to lung scans (CT scan with contrast) for multiple nodules in the lungs. I had one, 3 months later repeated, 6 months after that repeated so I have been there.

This is what I've found. The information on Metformin and contrast seems to be hard to get the true information. But since I am repeating these, another one coming up next month, I wanted to know what it is. The Metformin can be taken up til the day of the test. Prior to the test, the same day or day before depending on how quickly your lab works I need lab for BUN and creatine. 48 hours after the scan another creation and bun test are done. If those are still good then the Metformin can be resumed.

The first time I did this I didn't know about the procedure and because of that I had unnecessary problems. Now I time the CT for a day that I can get the 2nd lab and get the results. I do the scan on a Tuesday which means 48 hours later is Thursday. I then have the lab and should get the results either later Thursday of Friday. I also have it so that the lab gives the result right away (stat). The first time I got caught in the time crunch, the lab had not been told to do it stat and I couldn't get the result. Then I ran into the weekend and my sugar was very high. That first time I went back on the Metformin before I got the lab results. Now I know how to plan it. I could have the scan on a Friday, which makes a restest be on Monday. If you are being told that it is necessary to stop a few days before the scan you might want to check that out.

I take Amaryl which is in the same class of meds as glipazide. My last CT I started a few days before the scan trying to increase the Amaryl and decrease the Metformin. I could not make it work out like that as both drugs are required to get my sugar down. If you are off it for 48 hours I don't think you will have the problems like you did when you first started Metformin. Just plan the dates so that you only have to be off it for 48 hours.

When is your scan to be? Hopefully not yet and you can check out what I have said about only being off 48 hours.

Do take better care of yourself. Don't you have others that would be saddened by you having complications?
