Re: Ocular migraines?

Oh please keep us posted!! I get 12-20/month!!!! They never last longer then 10 minutes but they really do disrupt my life. I was on a bc pill that seemed to help alot but after a year I had them just as bad as when I first started the new bc pill. Good luck with that bp medication-I hope it works!!! What is the name of the medication you are on?

Re: Ocular migraines?

ok finally remebered to bring the bottle to work. I'm taking calan sr 120mg.
So far Ive had no occurances of the ocular spells since ive been on this but I do still get migraines everyday. Talk to your dr. about it i have another appointment on the 18th . he also put me on phenobarbatol to keep me from getting migraines and instead i get more migraines. Also since if been on all these meds a combination of migraine relief with anti convolsents for 3 months now and my short term memory is very bad. have any of you had this problem with any meds your taking? My husband jokes about getting me a gps tracker so he can find me if i ever get lost. Funny but not right now it is simple things not remembering we had company a month ago not remembering asking someone a question and repeat it 3 or 4 times in few minutes. forgeting how to start my car it is a stick shift. the feeling of being lost when not. it is scary.

Lightbulb Re: Ocular migraines?

First off I can relate to all of you. I get these types of migraines too but I get the migraine afterwards. I have had them for about 6 years now, it sucks but I just have to live with it I guess. My doctor gave me Imitrex which is a great help for the actual migraine, but nothing helps the aura, you just let it run its course for 20 minutes which is horrifying enough. I don't know who said it but your right I wish they'd find a cure for this horrifying condition. It interferes with life in general and most people don't understand. Glad I am not alone.

Calgarygirl-I noticed you said you were taking birth control pills. I want to tell you that some birth control pills can make your migraines worse and more frequent and can even up your risk of stroke...that is for people who get specifically migraine with aura. If you are taking a combined oral contraceptive with both the estrogen and progesteron. It is thought that the estrogen is what can increase your risk of stroke as well as making the migraines more frequent and worse. My OBGYN put me on a low dose birth control pill but (Ortho Tricyclen Lo) and after being on that for 6 months I was up to having 8 to 10 migraines a month. As soon as I stopped this particular BC pill the migraine frequency has decrease to 2 a month. Thats a big difference. My doctor now has me on Nor QD aka the "mini pill". Its progesteron only and I have been on it almost 3 weeks now with no problems. The only difference with this pill is you MUST take it the same time every day and there are no placebo pills. Anyways I hope this information helps you, its not safe to take combined oral contraceptives when you get migraine with aura.

Re: Ocular migraines?

Thank you lexybrock and sweeterthan for all the information. My doctor is well aware of the increased stroke risk with my migraines w/aura and just eye migraines but she believes that small risk outweighs the risks of getting pregnant, I'm 39 now. After I tried the Yasmin for a year which helped reduce my migraines quite significantly in the beginning, I was put on Diane 35 (now that made me nervous as I heard there was even a higher risk of blood clots and stroke) and told her I wanted something different and it is Tri-cyclen lo that I have been on for 4 months now and I've had the most amount of migraines in my life!! Now most of them are just the eye migraines/ocular migraines-whatever they're called and about 1/3 of them are aura w/migraine headache. I'm really wondering about this "mini" pill and curious as to why the doctor has not suggested this?? Is there any intermittent bleeding with this "mini" bc pill?? Thank you for the information, I will need to make a dr's appointment. The eye migraines disrupt my life so much it sometimes causes me depression. Again, thank you. Chris
