Beta Blockers and ADD...

Do Betablockers affect ADD? I recently started Toprol XL 50mg for blood pressure, and was curious whether it could help or hinder my ADD. Thanks.

Re: Beta Blockers and ADD...

I've been on Toprol XL for about 2 years and have ADHD. I can't take anything for the ADHD- certainly not stimulants, (Adderall was great for the few months I took it,) and Strattera didn't do anything but have side-effects.
I don't think I'm any different because of Toprol, at least regarding my ADHD.

Re: Beta Blockers and ADD...

I don't know whether the Toprol did something for my ADD or not. It would be interesting to know whether beta-blockers could help ADD/ADHD given that they have a "calming" effect.

Re: Beta Blockers and ADD...

According to Dr. Amen, blood pressure meds, have been found to help hyperactivity, agressiveness, and impulsivity. They do nothing in the way of helping attention issues.

Re: Beta Blockers and ADD...

I've been on a beta blocker called Atenolol for years, and started Daytrana in Feb. 07. No noticeable problems; I do think beta-blockers have a calming effect - in fact, I've known docs who prescribe Atenolol temporarily for people withdrawing from drugs who have panic attacks.
